Great post and even better recap @JohnInCarolina. I was a wee teenager when I saw the movie and damn near joined the Navy myself.

I do however respectfully disagree on one point...Tombstone was Val Kilmer's best role. Period. End of discussion. But that's for another thread and another day.

Happy Friday boys and girls, "I'm your huckleberry"

You’ve not seen Top Secret then????
Other girls may try to take me away
But you know, it's by your side I will stay
  • The sequel is getting good reviews and yes @ksmyrl Tombstone is his best movie by far.

Please tell me you guys can read this article. The first paragraph is probably the best I have ever seen in a review, any paper - maybe even anywhere.

"Cruise presides over some surprising differences from his first outing as the navy pilot hotshot in a film that’s missing the homoerotic tensions of the 80s original"

No homoerotic tension? Well... count me out.

So many movies deserve to be in the top 3, but this is my definitive 5.13.2022 list.

Not even a contest.  Also had a more poignant death.  Dizzy's death was tragic.

The thought and effort you put into this post is impressive.

Haha.  Not much effort frankly, as evidenced by all the mistakes in the OP.

I had just seen Ed's ( @CPFC1905) comment early this morning and started thinking about the movie.  A quick search of Top Gun gifs reminded me of so many things about the original film.   So much gold.   I figured it was Friday so what the heck, maybe the Buffalo would permit some harmless fun on the front page.

If you really want to make a "manly" flick, just add plenty of the stereotypical 'merican homoeroticism.  You know, same stuff you see in the institutions of manliness, like football butt pats, locker room towel snaps, wrestling for no reason at all in the dressing room (gotta end up in the old head-in-crotch lock for it to be legit).

It saddens me to hear there's less of that.  Probably the same folks banning books and siphoning off "freedom" with a big barber shop pole straw.

I could never really get in to Tremors.  Never cared for Kevin Bacon either.  Maybe they go hand in hand.

The movie I liked as a kid that he was in was Remo Williams.  I am sure that one does not hold up well at all, lol.

Agree on Remo Williams.  Joel Grey as Chiun made that movie great for me.

He is tenured.  That means he has unlimited time to watch movies AND to troll.  Tenured is even better than being retired.

Never having been tenured I cannot factully compare the above options but if reasonable, then the tenured have no incentive to retire.  Thus I suspect the "age of a tenured professor" is a driver, never mind the clearing house factor, salary and demands for publishing.  B)   But when one is young...

There are very few incentives for tenured faculty to retire, especially at a top private school.  That’s part of the reason our average retirement age is probably closer to 75 than 65.

That being said most of us work plenty of hours and don’t take much of any time off.  Junior faculty routinely work 80-90 hrs a week.  Making tenure at a place like this is akin to making partner at a top tier law firm.
