Even though I have done the preceding 3 other times on three other nights if I don’t follow the troubleshooting instructions they will send out a tech with a $99 service fee despite the “tech” being here last Sunday and informed me that too many people are using the internet at once.

I am still working through the details.  I got T-Mobile 5G, but my signal sucks at my house.  So I ordered some external antennas and will try those.  I can get 24Mbps peak with it right now, but occasionally drops to less than 1 Mbps.  Hoping for a consistent 50Mbps.  That would be 3x better than my OTA internet.

I use my Verizon phone as much as I can.

Reporting by CNBC indicates v1 Starlink satellites are unstable financially and functionally.  v2 satellites are hoped to correct both areas.  But there are deployment issues.
Seems the v2 sats have to be launched from a certain spacecraft that requires a specific engine that has multiple production issues.  That results in v2's not being launched.  Details are here:

I’ll check it out thanks. Att lately is the same 20mbps sometimes, sometimes 1. I figure if I have two services we can keep the at home worker productive. Sucks but cheaper than commuting I guess.

You have likely already looked into this, but if someone around you has better internet, you may be able to set something up on your side, using Ubiquiti gear?

They need your SSN so that several months from now they can verify that it's actually you calling them, and not just someone pretending to have trouble with their internet.

Yep, it is a ridiculous request.

My SSN was snatched (along with lots of other PII) in the large federal data breach that occurred about seven years ago.  We discovered this when we went to file our taxes, only to learn that someone had already filed a tax return impersonating me.  Spent a lot of time unwinding that with the IRS, which was a friggin nightmare.

So I'm overly sensitive to this kind of thing.  When a company asks for my SSN, my immediate question is why they need it.  I have yet to hear any of them provide an adequate justification.  Typically they have other options to verify your identity, which you only discover once you ask.

I have been through a similar situation 11 years ago related to a stolen company computer.  It took about a year and hundreds of hours to sort out.  Now I have Lifelock for my entire family.  They ultimately were the ones to finish the clean up.  A friend met one of their VPs when they were just starting and told them my story.  They agreed to take my case on even though I already had problems.  I am very cautious with giving my SSN.  However, I did to TMobile because they are a utility company and utilities always ask.  One group I never ever give it to is medical.

They did ping my number within 15sec of me giving it to them, and it was TMobile.  I get alerts anytime my SSN is punched in to any official verification system.  I also have a credit freeze.  Not foolproof by any means, but it has proven beneficial in the past.

  • That sucks @JohnInCarolina what a pain in the ass.  Local companies ask for mine when filing out tact exempt forms, I just make something up that is close, my ssn is not going in a desk drawer at auto zone. If something were to come up they have my name and address.
I asked him (T-Mobile)why he needed it and he said so I could qualify for future offers, I told him I am not interested in future offers, and this service is pay as you go. He said he had to have it to proceed so again I just made one up.

Maybe I slipped through because it was after hours, but given their track record of having ssns stolen in the last 6 months they ain't getting mine.

One thing that should be obvious in case I didn't mention it: you don't ever want to walk in to an IRS office.  If you think the DMV is bad, you have not been inside of an IRS office.  Nobody is happy to be there.  Not the employees, not the citizens, nobody.  And it shows.

That is good info to know.  I need to revaluate my security procedures.  Will probably start with "no" in all situations and go from there.  I admit, my spidey sense went off when they asked, but being so close to having internet, my guard dropped.  I assumed it was like signing up for utilities.

With Biden's trillion dollar plus up, I expect the offices to be much nicer now.  May be even a Starbucks inside.  Plus, a lot more folks will get the chance to interact and the IRS will get an opportunity to improve their people forward interactions.
