Traditions are tough to get away from. Each year we make egg nogg from an original recipe, (converted to bourbon) in place of the original call for Rum. My Beautiful Wife has told me it was found in the steamer trunk which carried all of her ancestors worldly possessions as they immigrated from Ireland to America. Who knows? I love a good legend, though.
I was doing something else important, at the time while they made it, (watching football, I think) so my only involvement was allowing them access to My Bourbon. My 1.5 liters of Blanton’s. Remind me again I really do love my children.
The recipe requires stone earthen casks, and wooden spoons. (Nowhere in that recipe does it call for Blanton’s, authentic my asš)
they made two casks. One we jarred up last night, one we will put in jars tonight.

After Making the Egg Nogg (did I mention they used all my Blanton’s???? Remind me That I love my children) I did a soled Beef Tenderloin, using pecan, roasted Brussels sprouts, and baked potatoes.
I used gunpowder mixed with Montreal, as the rub mix, came out perfect roasting for 2.5 hours at 275°F.
Was able to meet the needs of bloody blue to medium well, by wrapping in Al foil and rotating on the grid.
The Brussels Sprouts were amazing. Trimmed halved and de-stemmed, placed in a large sealable plastic bag with EVOO, minced garlic, black pepper, salt and onion powder, shakes and placed on a foiled cooking sheet @400°F, for 40 minutes, removing to flip/toss around every 10 minutes.
We served this little gem with dinner. A great French Bordeaux:

A great evening with the family, starting the Holiday season.

Every since they used the non blended Basil Hayden, all 4 bottles, it has been kind of a thing. They do know however, they touch my wine rack, people die. JKOC. You are right, I do and will love my children. Hope your Holidays are a wonderful way to end 2020.

It's definitely a good thing you love them.
A good friend of mine once had his college-age son come home with some buddies and they went to the basement to shoot some pool. A couple of hours later the son came to ask dad if there was any more Coke in the house. The dad asked "What are you doing with the Coke?". Son answered "Making Bourbon and Cokes".
They had consumed his entire, previously unopened bottle of Pappy Van Winkle that had been gifted to him by a wealthy friend. BY MIXING IT WITH COKE.
The son is still alive. He apparently also loves his children.XXL BGE, Karebecue, Klose BYC, Chargiller Akorn Kamado, Weber Smokey Mountain, Grand Turbo gasser, Weber Smoky Joe, and the wheelbarrow that my grandfather used to cook steaks from his cattle

Kids these days! Well, at least it'll be some REALLY GOOD eggnog, amirite?
For me the best part of this, knowing Ron as I do, I can absolutely picture the look on his face when his kids told him what they'd used. I know that look that is a healthy mix of anger and astonishment at the apparent lack of judgment.
BT looks amazing as always my friend. Happy Holidays."I've made a note never to piss you two off." - Stike -
@Foghorn
I once scored a freaking Truckload of split, very well seasoned Michigan cherry wood to use for fires outdoors, and smoking on the Egg. Suzy and I left for Burgundy a few years back, and came home to a fire pit with ashes piled about knee high. All but 6 pieces were used by the children. I did not tell them NOT to use it, so my fault. However, my neighbor said the bonfire they had rivaled the Texas A&M tradition. He is an Aggie. He would know, likable guy all the way around. Hate him when they beat the Shït out of my cats every year though.
Thank you for sharing, it has made me stop digging a mass grave next to the fire pit."Knowledge is Good" - Emil Faber

I’m also curious if the recipe is something you would share? If it’s a family secret I completely understand.I like old recipes. My Boston baked bean recipe is from the internet - but presented as an old family recipe. I have a couple of cookbooks that are copyrighted before WWII that have some good recipes. They are stark and simple yet delicious.Coleman, Texas

Talk about taking one for the team. They are lucky you are a wise, patient and understanding dad who does love his children.
You might want to challenge them to find you a bottle for Christmas, 2020. Then they might get it!Louisville; Rolling smoke in the neighbourhood. # 38 for the win. Life is too short for light/lite beer! Seems I'm livin in a transitional period. -
@YukonRon I’m available for adoption...and I would never do your bourbon stash like that.

Too bad I don't see any sriracha bleu cheese sauce in the pics...The bourbon thing is what the kids do every year, they always replace it with something better, Suzy makes sure of that.We still use Old Forrester B.I.B. For the slushees. If you have not tried it.......it is a very nice pour. Kind of a fave in the bourbon area.
If things should ever get back to normal, A trip to lLouisville would be pretty cool, especially if we can line up a concert in town as well. That is Sheryl Crowe taking a shot of OFo a few years back, at a private concert held at the OFo distillery, Downtown.
Great show.
