Welcome aboard and enjoy the journey. Above all, have fun.
Regarding "gotta haves" I suggest you give the search function here a look as there have been several threads about what you truly need. You will need a heat deflector set up for sure but there are options for that. Don't be in a hurry as this place can suck your wallet dry and max your CC limits in no time.Louisville; Rolling smoke in the neighbourhood. # 38 for the win. Life is too short for light/lite beer! I started with a ps for my xl egg, but eventually moved up and on to a different indirect system. My suggestion to you would be to talk to @tjv from www.ceramicgrillstore.com about a Soo and half stones. The only thing I think is a “must have” is a good thermometer. Like others have said the thermoworks products are great. I have an MK4 and a thermopop...they’re great (in my best Tony the Tiger voice).XL BGE, KJ classic, Joe Jr, UDS x2

Welcome to the forum. I bought a lot of BGE stuff when I got my XL, but ended up going with CGS accessories from Tom in the end. You will save money and get much more flexibility in your cooks!

Best advice I ever got as a newb.
Let the temp stabilize an hour or so before your critter goes on.
Tore my hair out chasing temps early on in operations.
Also, despite having a bunch of ThermoWorks monitoring gear, last few cooks I just followed the dome probe. Well calibrated, of course. Livin’ the analog life.
BUT, a meat probe is ur friend.
Oh,
And good whiskey while u wait. -

Geaux Tigers! The problem with a problem is that you don't know it's a problem until it's a problem, and that is a big problem.

Welcome-
2nd the adjustable rig over the platesetter. More expensive but gives you a lot more flexibility and cooking surfaces. My platesetter hasn’t been used since.Which reminds me- if anyone needs a free XL platesetter and in the Greensboro area give me a shout.Happy to have you join the group and look forward to seeing your cooks.Greensboro, NC -
I started similar to you, with a Weber kettle & gasser along with a WSM before buying a XL Big Green Egg.
Besides the CGS Woo and stone, in place of the plate setter, I'd recommend also getting their lump reducer ring. It allows you to use less charcoal for smaller and shorter cooks, which if you are like me will be most of your XL cooks. I use the Woo on 99% of my cooks and the reducer on 90% of them.
As others have said, if you don't have one buy a Thermopen. It will pay for itself in no time,Firing up my XL Big Green Egg, KJ Jr. or Weber gasser in Salt Lake City -
I would not get the plate setter. Shop ceramic grill store and just get a rig right off the bat. I don't use my plate setter any more.
A multi level rig with a stone gives you many options.Large, Medium, MiniMax, & 22, and 36" Blackstone
