I have always loved playing sports but was never one to like exercise. A friend got me into F3 workouts and I love it. It’s a free peer led group workout. They’re in 26 states so odds are there is a location near you. Check out F3nation.com. I’ve met a ton of great people that hold me accountable when I get lazy and don’t feel like showing up.   If you need a little push to work out look them up. Good stuff and did I mention it’s free???
Thanks for the insights. Where in the low country are you located? Grew up in the beautiful low country myself.

@northGAcock You are a welcome guest any time. I certainly am not one of those who think, "You need to do _____ to lose weight." I only know what has worked for me. I'm happy to share what has worked for me. It might give you ideas.

Great job; I dropped about 35 lbs last fall and winter (had to make a weigh in to ride a mule to Phantom Ranch).  I gained some back after our trip, when I changed jobs and got out of the good habits, but I'm getting back in to drop closer to what I should weigh.  I echo @sciaggie - I really think that everyone's body is different and what worked for me might not work for you and vice versa.  That being said, here are some things that worked for me, that you may want to try or not.

    1)  Intermittent fasting - I go at least 16 hours between my last meal one day and my first the next.  I try to go longer, but that tends to depend on how late we finish dinner and what my meeting schedule looks like.

    2)  Tracking and Portion Size - I was extremely diligent about tracking what I ate and drank (I use MyFitnessPal on my phone).  This included measuring portions - that really opened my eyes.  My 'serving' of almonds was actually 2.5 servings, etc.

    3)  Alcohol - cutting out the majority of my alcohol consumption had a double benefit for me; both eliminating the relatively empty calories included and also leaving me better prepared to have a good workout the next morning.

    4)  Meal planning and prep - having meals planned out through the week eliminated those "We don't have anything for dinner, why don't you pick up Popeyes?" type situations.  Same goes for lunches; I'm lucky to have a decent cafeteria in my building, but even decent options down there are heavier/fattiers than the salad/hard boiled egg/watermelon collection I brought from home.  Plus, bringing it in gives me better snack options too.

At the end of the day, everyone has research and anecdotes to support just about any diet.  As far as general advice, I still think Michael Pollan has the best..."Eat food.  Not too much.  Mostly plants."

Open up the WW app, scroll to the bottom, and under Explore, click on "Recipes". You can type in an ingredient and get back dozens of recipes that use it. It's saved my bacon many times! Vegetables can be much more than some grilled asparagus next to a mountain of fats and starches.

Here's a link to a Google doc someone created that is very useful for tracking overall weight loss - I use this and MyFitnessPal to keep data records:

Weight loss and diets are almost as touchy a subject as the best lump charcoal :)

Fad diets will come and go, but some constants are that calories going in and calories burned matter. WW and My Fitness Pal help because they help you be mindful about the calories going in.

And no matter what diet du jour you’re on, you won’t have much long term success unless your plan includes exercise.

Good luck with your journey. Losing some excess weight is just about the best thing you can do for your health.

    Ketosis
Eliminate bread, grains, sugar. And bad carbs like beans, rice and sweets
    Cook with avocado oil
Minimize dairy but a little half and half in coffee is OK

Coconut oil is excellent in coffee and keto friendly

Sugar free soda and gatorade zero are ok

Limit fruits to 20% of total calorie consumption and only blueberries, watermelon, apples.  No bananas,

Youll wake up 1 lb lighter everyday if you are militant about this

This YouTube (has some foul language) has encouraged me to eat more vegtables, something I have a hard time doing.   Probably not good for weight lost with butter and cheese but a new twist on veggie burger.

This thread inspired me to start tracking what I eat. I have the Samsung Health app on my phone that seems to work pretty well, however, how do you add meals that have multiple ingredients? Say, chicken enchiladas.  The recipe has the nutritional facts, but does anyone know of a way to add it without putting in each ingredient?

I know the majority, or so it seems, use the MyFitnessPal app, but they should be pretty similar.

Don’t know about that app. If it helps, the WW app allows you to save items to a meal which you name yourself. I use it for example to add ingredients and then name the item. You may have similar features....wort a look.

My son has lost 78lbs since January 6th. He eats what he wants but limits his intake to 1500 calories a day. He does very little exercise but is starting to work some light cardio in to the mix. He is young so he may benefit from that but just wanted to say there are a lot of ways to get this done. he didn't want to give up some of the carbs he likes so he has learned to work them in to a healthy way of eating. It's all about the choices. Booze is the devil when it comes to weight loss. That part sucks. Good luck- this can be done!

Edit to add: He (as do Janell and I) uses My Fitness Pal to track food intake and exercise. You can earn more calories with exercise as long as you stay at or below your net intake for the day. Every food you can think of with all the nutritional data is in there already. makes it easy to track. some people hate thinking about tracking food but I can say it's been an amazing way for him to learn to make great choices wherever he is. And if he wants to blow it out with buddies, he can save up calories and/or earn more through exercise and still stay on track. It's been good for him but any of these plans will work if you stick with it.

  • Well done Robin .. Didn't @Killit_and_Grillit do some kinda diet posts a while ago?
The Keto is not for me. I have been happy with the WW’s program. There app is outstanding. Adams post were largely Keto related. I did look at the weight loss forum page....and with a few exceptions, not much there.  I don’t plan to change that, but after a couple months.....need some new food to try.
Congrats! Yeah weight watchers and keto do not vibe. Gotta do what works for ya. My mom crushes weight watchers but keto does not work for her.

My freakin' dog has been a health benefit for me. Walking her in the 'hood 5K meters/day has helped me shed some weight.

After being innactive, for years, during leg reconstruction, everything had gotten into dangerous territory (bp, cholesterol, etc.), but those walks, have been helping.

Got a bit to go but I am on my way.

Best of luck Robin. We want to keep you around a long time.

everybody's metabolic rate is different, but my DOC broke it down like this and its been working for me with little exercise.

A 45 year old male burns 8 calories per pound breathing. If one weights 267, which I did, one can eat 2136 calories in a day to maintain that weight.

He recommended eating no more than 1,800 calories a day. If one does this, they will lose weight "guaranteed".

Well, I like numbers so I started cataloging my caloric intake with "MY PLATE" (app on Apple).

The first 20 dropped off in just 3 or 4 weeks. It has slowed buy I am still losing a pound or two every few weeks.

I'm down to 239 from 267, which means now I only can have 1912 calories a day to maintain 239.

The struggle will really come in to get closer to my target weight if 199, where I can have 1592 calories a day.

I've got a small herb garden out back.  Quite often I just pick a handful of an herb and scramble it up with my morning eggs.  You can create lots of different flavors by varying herbs or combinations of herbs.  Simple and easy.  We do a lot of salads plus protein in the evenings.  Wilt a romaine half or iceberg wedge for salads.  Keeps me using the BGEs.  Use good oil and good vinegar with herbs from the garden for dressings.  We also grow leaf lettuce in an AeroGarden.  Once every few days we pick our salad.  Thinking about expanding the hydroponics to growing some lettuce in Mason Jars.  Consuming foods you've grown yourself adds a fun factor to healthy eating.  If the HOA allowed it, I would get some chickens for eggs.
