I noticed an expiration date on a jar of salt once.

I did not dispose of it upon surpassing the listed date which notified me as "Best if used before."

In this specific example of rebellion, I will say "No".

However, when a logical approach is utilized, specific to various forms of food, I will follow the directions as stated on the provided packaging.

My college diploma is still rolled up in the tube they sent it to me in. I did not frame it as instructed by many. I felt that it would be easier to just return to sender in case there was eva a recall on it.

    Poll:

Is an expiration date an instruction?  Personally (and I would not presume to speak for others), I view expiration dates as mere statements, not commands.

    YMMV.

    Carry on.

Ynette believes that a product magically goes bad the day after the expiration date. I rely on my own senses. If it is green and fuzzy, I might chuck it.

I just threw out a tube of prescription medicine with a 2010 expiration date. Only because I finally asked my doctor for a new prescription.

  • Aren’t expiration dates made in consultation with attorneys?  This is so that the producer is protected in the event of some goober eats a six month old egg and tries to sue.

The real question is "What do you do when the manufacturer/maker recommends one thing and SWMBO recommends the opposite?

Ah, your question answers itself.  "Manufacturer/Maker 'recommends'" vs She Who 'MUST' Be Obeyed.

I Sometimes throw things out for swmbo, and then take them back out of the trash after she leaves the room...  I mean really it’s the whole sock trash just because of one little hole?

high salt and/or vinegar content are preservatives, so I don't stress over those.

Absolutely right.  Just don't align the holes or cross the streams and you can get a lot more use outta that ole sock.

Cracks me up with peoples food askeeredness. Any sauce with an acid base is fine on a shelf. I refrigerate my maple syrup because moldy maple syrup isn’t so good. First hand knowledge. Tomato based sauces benefit from refrigeration.

    Oh, and refrigerate your prosciutto!🤣

our daughter in law keeps the mayo on the counter.  Won’t refrigerate.  Says it doesn’t need refrigeration.  Internet search backs that up. However no one eats her potato or macaroni salad when she brings over!

Funny. Homemade mayo needs the fridge. Store bought, I refrigerate.

Holding a chuck bucket while you’re sitting on the crapper (pi$$ing from your a$$hole) for multiple days is not something you soon forget nor ever want to repeat.
