Everybody loves a campfire. It is a signal to everyone of a celebration for a day done very well.
If you are choosing to bring firewood in for Butt Blast, please be sure it is insect free.
One of the major transport systems of threats to initiate forest destruction, is firewood that contains insects such as the Emerald Ash Borer, Gypsy Moths, and/or others, unwittingly brought in by folks like us.
Destructive insects have several modes of transport, not just limited to firewood, but it seems to be the easiest and most accessable, while providing the bugs havens to feed and multiply.
We certainly mean no harm to the environment, but, with one bug in one piece of wood, we can endanger so many other trees and plants.
It is always a better idea to purchase firewood locally, IF you are unsure about what your firewood may be hosting.
It is a small detail, and perhaps thought insignificant by most, however, if you get the time to stroll through the woods, take a look at all the ash trees that are dead or dying, and you will realize the harm these insects can cause.
When camping in areas away from home, it is wise to buy firewood that has been kiln dried, if you can find it. Not only will you get a better burn, but the heat levels in the kiln drying process eradicates any insects that it may have contained.
Plus, if you buy locally, chances are, you are not introducing a foreign species into a very delicate ecosystem, which is currently stressed to the max.
I know I must appear as an anti MAGA, birkenstock wearing, Nepalese prayer flag hanging, tree hugging, left wing socialist..... so be it. However, folks like me want to make sure the places we enjoy will be there for your grandchildren and ours.
It is a small thing we can do, that will provide a long term impact.
