I don’t know that you’ll find it in Webster’s anytime soon but it’s a common term in atmospheric physics / modeling.

Uhm... no.  The process is to take an existing model, and instead of running it forward in time from the present date (which would be a forecast or prediction), you start the model at some time in the past and see how well it reproduces measurement data that has already been taken.  The idea is that if the model is any good then it should be reasonably proficient at reproducing past events that are known.

There's a book some of you should read.

The paperback edition has a new preface that was added.

  • If you look at that graph and your main takeaway is that one of the best scientists NASA has ever produced was mostly just making stuff up 30 years ago when he testified in front of Congress, then, well....

You jest, but that notion is making a surprising resurgence. It's covered in the new preface I mentioned above.

Sadly population growth is one of the biggest contributors. @YukonRon is correct. It takes some research to fully understand but it's real and happening as we speak.

I detest people who resist and deny climate change because they are paid to think that way to by the people that contribute the most to climate change. Secondly I detest those that are too stupid to see that.

So should politicians not talk about science and/or should scientists not talk about politics?

Right.  I’m sure you’d be much more likely to listen to them were they all living in tents and sending out messages on scrolls.

I think you’ll find that most scientists, at least publicly, try to stay away from politics.

Politicians have an obligation to try to understand the science, and then propose policy solutions to problems that arise.

On balance while I respect what Gore was trying to do, in retrospect I don’t think he was the best messenger.  Somebody like Carl Sagan probably would’ve been much better in that role.

You don’t understand what climate scientists are trying to do, first and foremost, which is to understand the science.  You are confusing them with politicians.  You seem to believe that they are primarily preaching to the public about behavior, and you are wrong.

International conferences facilitate the dissemination of scientific ideas.  We have been holding things like these for almost 100 years now.  If you genuinely believe that climate scientists holding them is some indicator that they don’t genuinely believe the science, that it’s somehow all for show, then I can’t help you, and it’s unlikely that anyone else can either.

As a final comment, it’s pretty rich that the dude who has been whining for days about threads like these is in the middle of one sh!tposting.
