It’s been a horrible/great week

As some may recall, my mom was diagnosed with stage IV abdominal cancer.  She started chemo in early June.  Well yesterday we brought her to the cancer center with increased pain and weakness.  Doctor ordered a scan and the cancer had spread and gotten worse despite the chemo.  So yesterday, mom decided to sign on to hospice.  In some ways it is a relief, and other ways extreme grief.

About a month ago, Mom decided to gift her three children a good sum of money with the caveat that we spend it on something/multiple things that we wouldn’t/couldn’t purchase otherwise.  So I decided that I would buy a new XL egg.  I go to my local ACE, which I have never been to before, just to look.  I get talking to the sales manager and he says he has a deal for me.  They’ve been trying to sell the XL with table for a year, but had no takers.  He says “$1300 for all of it and I’ll throw in delivery and a plate setter.” We’ll me not being a total idiot, said ok, let’s pay for this now.  That was a week and a half ago, and it was delivered today.

In the mean time, I was on Craigslist on Saturday and saw a brand new large, with a table, advertised for $700.  Me, not being a total idiot said yes to that as well.  So my brother and I picked that up on Monday.  My brother was gifted my old egg, which was our dad’s who passed away November 1, 2017.  So this has come around circle to help others with their eggdiction.

I showed my mom the picture and she cried in happiness as she knew I had wanted an XL for the longest time.  So I leave you with this:  **** cancer.  Hug your loved ones tightly, and smoke on

You certainly covered all the emotions for me there. So sorry for the grief and pain you, your family, and especially your mother, are dealing with. How wonderful that she is able to enjoy providing the gifts for you and your brother. Best wishes for you all going forward.

We are dealing with similar situations. Both parents of my wife are failing at the same time.

With all the terrible things your mother and family are enduring, it's pretty cool that getting a couple new BGE's brings your mother peace. Our prayers are with your family.

Sounds like your Mom is a great lady who made a tough choice but the right one.  I hope the docs can find a way to reduce some of the pain she’s in as she transitions from this world to the next.  I’m glad you had a chance to show her the gift she gave to you.   Peace.

Tough but a fulfilling read.  Good for you to be able to share the results of her gift.
I wish you and your family strength as you go thru this.  Serenity for your mother.
You are so right about cancer.

All I can offer is that hospice is good. My Mom was cared for by them not long after the service began. My Dad, just a few years ago. There is little or no pain for those under their care.

Our prayers go out to your Mother and the rest of your family. Nothing can ease the pain of battling through these things more than the love of family!

I am so sorry, I lost my Mom 4 years ago-still hurts. My Mom kind of did the same thing. About 10 years ago she gave all of us kids some money, said it was our inheritance. Said she wanted to see us enjoy it now-not after she was gone. We all did different things-went on vacation, fixed up our house-stuff like that. She loved it.

I am going to do that too.

Man, great gifts from your mother that will last you a lifetime.  I know it will bring you a measure of joy to think of her as you enjoy the outdoor quiet time, standing over your cooks.

@JNDATHP - same here, both of my wife’s parents, in their 80s, are in hospital with pneumonia.  Dad has been under various levels of care for over a year.  Doing my best to be supportive...

That’s a first.  Tears from an egghead post.

Deepest condolences to you during an unimaginably difficult time.  You described your mom wonderfully in just a few paragraphs.  And now, every time you crack open the Egg, or even see it in your back yard, there is Mom.  She sounds like she is a wonderful, loving woman.  Glad to see you made her so happy

I'm so sorry to hear the news about your mother.  I can empathize with you and your family because your story is so similar to ours, with the exception of the BGE.  Godsend to you and your family.  Hospice is a great organization and you won't regret that decision.

Any road will take you there if you don't know where you're going.
