Used Egg possible water issue

JMCXLJMCXL Posts: 899
picking up a used Egg that has been unused and outside for a year, concerned it might has water issues, do I just do a low and slow for a few hours to be safe. Also, any signs that will show water that might have been sitting in it. Thanks for any feedback

Do you mean like it had been under water like in a flood? Or just normal rainfall?

Rainwater? No problem. stike dumps ice water from a cooler in his to cool it quickly at a tailgate.

I hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!

personally I would just  pull out the fire ring and fire box and leave all open in the sun to dry it out and then built a low temperature fire to dry it out. Any signs of mold? Even it so the fire will burn it off.

I’d clean it out real good, fill it up with lump, light it, and run it around 300 for a few hours. I’d put the daisy and grid inside while burning.

I’d also have plenty of beer or scotch on hand while performing task above. Oh, and a good cigar.

Just cook on it.  No problem.

  • I have had a water issue with one of my Larges for a while.

I had had some mold in it and a nice day this weekend so I opened, yanked the guts to dry like @rrp suggested, put them back in and lit a 600* Fire.

Good as new. (Except for the water, I think it’s an alignment problem)

Get it to around 300 for a few hours, that should dry it out if there were any issues relating to water. Check for cracks. Water in cracks in cold temps (expansion) could be a problem.

Well, I picked up the egg, it was in a table and not until I got home did I realize the bottom was cracked - so water turnouts, is the least of my concerns. Think it is a bust. The crack goes from one side to the other...

If it's in a nest and not over a wood deck you could use it for lower temp cooks with no problem.

agree with RRP.   I'd ask the guy if he still has his original receipt, and see if his dealer can get him (aka you) a new base.

If you have not checked, you can get a new base for 150.00 and then would have a warrenty on that piece.

I looked and the base was $430,  where did you see a price of $150 for a large base, that’s would be interesting

This is what I saw but not sure it is correct
    https://ceramicgrillstore.com/products/egg-base-all-grills-big-green-egg

I see it is a large and when you click on the down arrow and put in the large the price jumps to the price you quoted. I should have checked further

So so did you check out any cold smoking threads?

That's great the seller refunded your money and said just keep the egg .  Stand up guy right there - I'm sure others might have given your money back and then tried to resell to another unsuspecting buyer.

Just get the new base. I don’t think I’ve ever read of a lid cracking. And the guts can glue with high heat JB weld and hold up easily.
