I’ve enjoyed cooking all of my adult life. When my kids were at home, my wife and I had other priorities - homework, ball games, etc. We cooked, but it was whatever we could crank out quickly. Now that the kids are gone I have more time to make things that simply take longer to prepare.
Also, if you enjoy something you tend to want to be good at whatever that thing is - in this case cooking. I read and experiment and try to improve my knowledge and skill set.
I have friends say, “I can’t compete with your cooking” when we go over to their homes for dinner. I always tell them it’s not a contest. I simply enjoy cooking. Maybe my IG is to show off and be “high faluty” (falutiness) sp? Lol. Maybe I just like sharing and picked a platform for that purpose. Yes, it strokes my ego to have my food seen by tens of people world wide. :)
    I hope folks don’t think I’m a food snob - just a foodie.

I remember in college I would druel over hungry howies pizza or some gas station wings...now I wouldn’t eat it if it was free.

after I started egging, I look way to closely at the quality of food...

    when was it for you?
@slovelad this made me laugh! When they are hot...the chicken fingers at the Chevron around the corner...are the best in town. I very rarely get these anymore, but if i happen to stop for gas there and notice a basket coming out of the grease, i end up walking out with a box of 4! Maybe once or twice a year nowadays...

As far as being a snob...it's ground beef! As far as grilled burgers. And i never dreamed that was possible. Have hooked up with a couple of local farmers. $7/lb. I'm hooked!!

I'll still eat just about anything. Cardboard pizza, brat from the gas station, Burger King. I'm down. I'm even looking forward to my breaded fish sandwich from the Kwik Trip gas station this Friday with a chocolate milk. (Lent and gave up pop during it) Yep I'm weird.
Kwik Trip food, I’m there too brother...

I know I'm a snob when my mutt has become a snob. My dogs in the past would eat whatever I tossed them. My current Corgi/Shepherd  mix will let it smack him in the face if he's not sure he wants it.

Who doesn't add their own mix of fresh veggies/meat/egg to the bowl?

Agreed - could never get boring.

I’ll still grab an In and Out double double now and again. Or some A&W chicken tenders.

But put me in a steak house  and I won’t order a steak. Usually will go with whatever chicken dish they serve. The steaks I cook at home are cooked the way we like them, rarely get them the same way at a steak house.

Was gifted a gift card to Ruth’s Chris a couple of years ago, the wife ordered a rib eye and I had the filet. Neither one of us finished our steak. Took the remainder home for our Lab “Halle”.
Jabam ,count your blessings....since there are ZERO  "in and out burgers " east of the Mississippi River ,my wife  and I plan our flights to the west coast to include airports near an "in and out burger. While there, we text pictures to our son here in Florida, while eating a double double.
still trying to figure out how a state that continues to re elect Nancy pelosi and Jerry brown can have such fast food great burgers.i don't get it.

My mom (who grew up in rural SC) was a great cook. I was fortunate that my family was established at my birth, as she was 42 when i was born. I grew up cooking with her and still hold making holiday candies and cookies among my fondest memories. To answer the original posters question.....I think it is when you realize that you can produce something that is both enjoyable and fills the belly. I know for me.....this still holds true today.

I've have always tried to cook better . I've done more than my share of mediocre food. I think of food as more of a facilitator. For example one of my favorite taco places by my house, it's kind of like a speakeasy for tacos. It's a little on the cheap side. Plastic tables and all. I can't speak spanish very well but we get it figured out together. I wouldn't hesitate to take anyone there because the tacos there are just that good. I'm sure there are plenty of food snobs out there. I try to only judge my food.

I certainly appreciate quality food and enjoy fine dining but feel right at home at any hole-in-the-wall eatery.  Doesn't have to be fancy for me just cooked with passion......that speaks to me but there is a time and place for everything.  I'm not afraid to choke down Arby's, Dominoes, Krystal or even a roller taquito from the QT if hungry enough.
I, like @northGAcock, grew up with a mom who was a great cook and always in the kitchen.  At breakfast we discussed what we would have for dinner.  If she was cooking and I wasn't doing anything she had me in there helping.  I just grew up in it!!
Getting an egg and spending time on here has definitely elevated my game....and emptied my wallet.
