After almost 6 months of have a large BGE, I am completely hooked on it.  It has changed my life and I really appreciate this forum and the vast experience.

couple of random questions if you all could interject.

Feeback and thoughts on:

-Kickash?  My buddy told me about it and said he loves it

-Smokeware for the top vent to replace the stock one?  Also Looks like their site has a 2 level grid that the top level rotates out?

-best coffe rub?

-Lastly,  how to get crunchy chickens wings on the BGE?  I have read to leave them uncovered in the fridge for 24hrs?

thank you very much!!

Welcome aboard and enjoy the journey.  Give the search function here a look or a google query with your questions and big green egg.
Reason I suggest this as you can get caught up in the hype/options and miss the essence of the value of cooking over a lump charcoal fire.
I won't comment on your specifics other than to endorse over night or longer with the wings in the fridge and you can enhance that with corn-starch.
    Above all, have fun.
You will realize there are many ways to get a great outcome with the BGE-just pick one and adjust as you go with follow-on cooks.

Coffee rubs , Dizzy Pig makes a good one named Redeye Express or a better home made one is called Mickey’s Coffee Rub. Just search on the forum within the past month it was reposted but it dates back many years. PM me later if you can’t find it. I don’t cook wings much so listen to others about them . I got a Kick Ash Basket for my medium a month ago and love it, again there was a thread on the forum within the last month. I use the original daisy wheel.

Yes to the KAB. I'm not personally a fan of the cap, but everyone else on the planet is. And I just fry my wings now. Quicker and better...

I'm exactly the opposite. Like my Smokeware. KAB, meh. But I do have a high que under it. Accomplishes the same thing with air flow, just not ash. But I hardly clean my eggs.
  • You’re on the right path.

Smokeware and Kickash are both awesome products.

Google Mickeys coffee rub recipe Big Green Egg. (Or someone will post it soon I bet). It’s awesome on pork and wild game. Red eye express is also great.

Raised direct 400 degrees and patting dry and left oncovered for 24 hours is a home run. You can’t miss.

I use my daisy wheel but would get the SMOBOT controller before the smokeware if I were to change out.

  • The most important accessory in my opinion is a true instant read thermometer. In fact, I do not consider it an accessory.

KAB and the smokeware cap are great.  So is the two level grate for the price.  The ceramic grill store is fantastic and has a lot of options, but if you're just looking for something simple, then the Sw will fit the bill.  Dizzy pig red eye express or anything else from dizzy pig.  Thermapen is a must.  Lastly and most expensive is the Flameboss 300......cruise control for the egg and my favorite accessory when it comes to smoking.  My other new favorites are the new plate setter and grate lifter/hangers from KAB.  Love em!!
  • I think eventually I may give some of those accessories a try but for now I love keeping it simple. I try to keep it as simple as possible and enjoy all the cooks I have done so far!

as far as accessories, is there a problem you're trying to solve? if not, just buy what makes you happy, something you want to try out

my most often used accessory has been 3 regular old red bricks i picked up for change at home depot.  use em to grill raised direct, or to hold up a second grid.

also consider new pans to use in the egg.  a lodge CI skillet is awesome.  I got a few paella pans, too, and paella became one of my favorite cooks last fall.

I also use three bricks placed between my cast iron and ceramic coated steel grids to raise to a bit above the felt line. My bricks were left overs from a brick paver project that I was in charge of though.
  • As mentioned, Mickey's coffee rub is great. As for the Smokeware, I'm sure it's terrific and lots of people love theirs, but if your BGE happens sit under an overhang or is otherwise protected from the rain there is simply no need for it.

If you have a way to cook indirect, a way to cook raised and an instant read thermo, you're good.  The rest is gravy.

    Glad you ...

Not an accessory per see, but when your gasket burns up - which it will - look around for an alternative...nearly 4,000 others know what I'm getting at!

For coffee rub I like the Weber's version: Weber Gourmet Coffee Rub, 12.5 Ounce, (Pack of 3) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01D3MEGOM?ref=yo_pop_ma_swf

You can get 12.5 ounces for about $5 and it's great on briskets.
