  • Hmmm.

I am a High Performance Driving Education (HPDE) instructor - I coach drivers on how to execute faster laps on race courses.

I frequently drive (in the USofA) above 150mph (at race tracks.)

I don't have religion for any particular marque.
I've owned Jags, Toyotas, Fords, Hondas, Audis, Daimlers, BMWs, Chevys, Subarus, ... you name it.

Don't get a hard on about what your experience was even 3-5 years ago with a particular marque, that's all changed in recent years and they're all better than your memory thinks they were then.

Compare what's available today across all marques with what you want and spend a lot of time driving the myriad of choices, then make your decision.

If you wait until next year, be prepared to repeat all that again at that time.

Don't over think this decision. Be happy with your choice.
Dude they already bought the car.

It looks a whole lot like a Chump race :-)

Some buddies and I built the Alfa right when Chump started, and did well with it.  It was fun and fast, but took a lot of effort to make reliable (and it sounded awesome).

We all moved to different cities and sold it.  I've since run a few times with a really good Chump team (RBank Racing) in one of their hella fast Saabs.  Not as sexy a ride, but great endurance racing cars and a very well run team.

I haven't run in the last year, but plan on getting back out once things settle down at home.

    How 'bout you?

You must drive flat out. ;-)

BTDT, but cars have gotten too fast for me to feel good in the right seat with no protection.  Crapcans w top-tier safety are a bit more reassuring, and even those have their bad days

I agree.  Gonna do both Porsche driving school and BMW's compliments of my sister.  Porsche will rule.

Good advice.  We used all available resources and bought the latest generation Q5 from Audi.  Great performance for what it will be used for and where.  I'm a car fan, get all the major magazines.  I follow technologies, car companies, etc but you're right - you gotta drive it!

The bar has been raised to very high levels due to the high level of technology and computers integrating all aspects of design/build as well as the CAN network and digital control of ECU and almost every other aspect of the car's day to day operation.

It's a glorious epoch to live in if you love cars.

For daily drivers there is no doubt that quality, fuel economy, reliability, comfort, safety, ease of use etc. are all better now than ever. It does have its downsides though and there are plenty of things that are standard on many cars now that detract from the fun of driving - weight, EPAS, traction control, using braking as LSD, pointless driving modes and other electronic 'aids'.

Agree.  This is the wife's car.  I would never buy one for myself.  I have my 987 for daily crazy driving and a pickup for utility.

My Beautiful Wife owned two A6s, one was a turbo. She loved them. The A6T was the third fastest car she ever drove. Her Boxter S was the fastest. Her other Boxter was second.
That all changed when she met me pimping around in my '97 Ford Eddie Bauer Expedition, about 8 years ago. It is still a total babe magnet. She continues to ride in it with me.
I think I love everything about this post.
    @JohnInCarolina

I know little or nothing about racing or these cars, because they could never get me where I wanted to go, due to, at the time, being too low to the ground therefore having enough or little clearance for off road activities.

My interests are "off road", and then going further off of that, which is considered "off road". I speak of winches, torque, crab crawling differentials, racks and gear. My needs for a vehicle are to get me places few would ever want to go.

I have designed several types of unique applications over the years for Porsche and Audi, but could not tell you anything about the cars, which they were made for, other than they seem to be fine and fun driving machines for those who enjoy them.

My Beautiful Wife, at the time, was totally into those cars. Her weekday drivers were the Audis, and her weekenders were the Boxsters. She spoke of things about cars, that I have no interest in. My only interest in those cars is watching her drive and watching her race.

My weekdayer was the Expedition, and my weekender was a modified Jeep.

Talk about finding the single point located on a 3D graph shared by intersecting lines.....

She has always been, and always will be, on a vastly higher plane of class, than I. I remain, to this very day, amazed she finds me remotely interesting, on any level.

I think it might be the Big Green Egg?

This is one of my favorite images. Getting ready to light it up. She did well on this day. She will always be the best part of me.

Too expensive, and I am too cheap. My repair shop is my garage and driveway. It is there. A lot.

Porsche drive the sh!t out of my manual  '97 Taco, zips in and out of traffic fine.

Sat, Sun drive and pull with the '94 Chevy.

If stuff breaks, and it isn't major, I fix it, on both.

    $0 monthly payments.

Will hopefully get 10 more years out of both, before I buy another slightly used vehicle to get me by for the remainder before RV time.

I'll buy a new crate, have a tranny rebuilt, before I ever buy a new vehicle.  Same goes for campers.  That's how I've been raised though.

My wife has '15 and she likes it.  We are getting ready to sell it though to get something a little bit bigger.  My dad got a Levante last fall and he loves it.  Have you looked into that?  Not exactly a gas saver, but a fun one to drive.

that was, for me, the best decision, enough HP and a FANTASTIC double clutch transmission

I've owned Audi's S-Tronic and BMW's Steptronic and Audi's transmission is WAY better.
