I prefer wine much more than beer, and we tend to attend multiple wine tastings a month-and belong to two wine clubs. That being said: for Summer drinking I like a good French Rose. I figure in the Summer it is way too hot to drink a Cabernet or Malbec, this is a good middle of the road choice. If you like a sweeter red there is Epothic-not my favorite but many people like them. A good mass market blend is Penfold's Shiraz, Rabbit Ridge Zinfadel. A better idea is to find a wine store in your area and ask-you should not have any problem finding a good one in your price point.

I sure hope you've found a good bottle by now.

I Like Argentinian Malbec's with my beef. I find it to be a great pairing, as it is typically a heavier tasting wine. In Ontario, I'm buying in the $10-$15 range, which should be well below $15 in the US.

@Botch Meritage is a Bordeaux style blend (can include Cab Sauv, Merlot, Malbec, Cab Franc and Petit Verdot) and the name is a marketing wonder...they take the "merits" and "heritage of Bordeaux and now you have a way around US labeling laws and a wine you can sell for big dollars. Pinotage is a grape varietal and is a cross between the Pinot Noir and Cinsaut grapes.
