Man I'm sorry because that's a really cynical view. If you're ever in or around Durham let me know. I'd be happy to show you around campus and see where I work and what's going on.Ozzie_Isaac said:

So, only physicists and astrophysicists are "truth seekers" in your opinion? No other areas are after truth or understanding?Ozzie_Isaac said:
Scientists have a desire to seek out truth and understanding.JohnInCarolina said:
Well this is a new one. What differentiates scientists from analysts, in your view?Ozzie_Isaac said:
Problem is people throw the term "scientist" around with no thought.nolaegghead said:
Wrong. Technology is built on the backs of scientific giants, research and knowledge riding on the backs of other scientific giants and so forth.Ozzie_Isaac said:
Geniuses and inventors did all that.nolaegghead said:
Gotta cut them dum "scientists" a break. I mean, they invented electricity and the very computers we're using so you can conveniently and efficiently express, on a 'puter network for all to see, how willfully ignorant you are. Viva la science! (emoticons added so no feelings are hurt)thetrim said:More preaching from "scientists"

"Scientists" these days just put poorly taken data into excel and manipulate it till it gives the answers their funding source requests.
The physicists and astronomers are the only real scientists these days.
The climate "scientists" are not. They are analysts. The people worrying Trump will ruin the world are not "scientist", they are mostly just rabble rousers who are going to get washed away by the changing tide.
I have great respect for scientists, not analysts.
The number crunchers manipulate data to get the answer they want. They are not concerned with the scientific method, nor repeatability. -
Key here is to set up your experiments to avoid confirmation bias. Shoe horning data to match expectations in not the scientific method.nolaegghead said:

As to your second sentence, I don't know of a single lab that operates that way. When another group can reproduce your results, that increases the impact of your work. The incentives for scientists are exactly the opposite of what you seem to think they are.
Scientists are largely driven by... ego. They want to be the first ones to have made a breakthrough in understanding or technology. And they want to publish papers in the best journals so that their work is highly cited and their h-index (basically a third leg) grows and grows.

There are certainly folks who have been driven to falsify data to make their ideas look better than they really are, but that's about it. Usually this is discovered eventually and it doesn't go well for them at all.Ozzie_Isaac said:

My dooms day meal if planned would be a surf n turf parmesan garlic butter filet mignon, sous vide lobster tail with fried onions and potatoes. Dessert would be moms rubarb crisp with a little vanilla ice cream.

Watched Hannity tonight interviewing President Trump. The series of questions centered on the enemy we face. President Trump talked about how in history the enemy had its uniforms on, and the one we face today has no uniform, and he referred to people who go blow up nightclubs as RATS.

Riiggghhhtt. North Korea, Russia, China and Iran don't have uniforms anymore. And I suppose the Fenian and Irish Republican Brotherhoods sewed them back in the 1850s. Also probably the Jacobians in 1700 France wore uniforms. Because they wanted to be identified. Go back to the first century, the Sicarii in the Judaea province probably wore them too. Really, it's just brilliant that he's identified terrorists as people that don't wear uniforms! And for the first time in history!!! This must be the secret that he is going to tell the generals. Friggin' brilliant.westernbbq said:Watched Hannity tonight interviewing President Trump. The series of questions centered on the enemy we face.
