I have read many Heinlein novels, but not in recent decades.

Do I feel a "Starship Trooper" reference coming along?

Nope, your use of the word "grok" caught me off-guard.  I haven't seen that since I read "Strangers in a Strange Land".

I have been reading this thread, but staying quiet.

You have nut case that has access to more fire power than any civilian should have. Various government agencies link it to radical Islamic terrorism for self serving purposes to ensure larger budget more staff.......   This guy was in need of psychiatric care not the right to buy two new guns and enough ammo to start a small war.

He's either nuts or a radical Islamic extremist.  However, by your logic we should outlaw air travel because of the 9-11 attack, pressure cookers because of the Boston Marathon bombing, fertilizer because of the Oaklahoma City bombing and motor vehicles because of the loss of life attributed to their misuse every year.

@JohnInCarolina so what would you do? Just curious where you stand on all this. Not trying to antagonize, just wanting to hear your view.
With respect to the shooter in Orlando?  I'm not sure there's a lot more that that could have been done by law enforcement. The guy was born here, acquired a firearm legally, and with an apparently overnight conversion - appears to have had little to no contact with terrorists overseas.  He was a "lone wolf."  There's a reason ISIS is encouraging those - because they're almost impossible to catch.
Overnight conversion...you know exactly nothing of what you spew. ISIS took credit...and the evidence of his radicalism, depth and breadth is DAMNING and overwhelming. Like usual though, you and your liberal buddies are out in force here to belittle those who speak the truth. You progs ALWAYS know better. You pity us poor ignorant fools who are so bigoted and hateful. Literally nearly everything you wrote has been proven woefully wrong based on the incoming evidence. But you say it with conviction though. You are an authority, right? Please.

I have family members in Fort Pierce where this human filth (refuse to mention his name) lived his last hate-filled days. Three blocks away. I know people he went to middle school with. According to text messages with them today, he "took his Muslim faith very seriously..it defined him" and "wanted badly to be a police officer."

According to people that knew this guy and grew up with this guy, he was "off". Those are not the words of some Islamic-loving left wing hate site like Huffington Post. Those are words of people who knew this murdering radical islamic terrorist when he was still a boy.

Now there is word today that his employer was afraid to fire him because he was Muslim and scary. An off-duty cop who worked security with him quit because the guy was unhinged and he was fearful of what he might do.

Those who believe in Sharia believe that gays should be KILLED. Do the math with population data worldwide (source here: http://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2015/12/07/muslims-and-islam-key-findings-in-the-u-s-and-around-the-world/) and that means MILLIONS of muslims support Sharia Law and the KILLING of gays. Sick. Just peaceful people except for those very few radicalized...MILLIONS.

BTW...here is a pic I got texted to me today...just in case you think I am, you know, some ignorant hayseed just making crap up to fit the VAST RIGHT WING CONSPIRACY.

    Political Correctness kills. Full stop.

Prayers for all the families who lost fathers, sons, mothers, daughters, and friends in the senseless shooting today. They will be quickly forgotten and simply politicized as yet another push for guns and a denial of reality courses through the brains and out the mouths of the corrupt and opportunistic media and representatives from BOTH "sides" of the aisle.

It is always amazing to me how liberals run in packs online to bully opposing worldviews and spew their venom toward any who dare to disagree with their touchy-feely, naive and frankly dangerous views. Every time someone dares mention one of their pet issues, they band together to attempt to drown out, ridicule and marginalize. Sad. This thread is just another in a long line of examples.

Facts and logic are like KYRPTONITE to a liberal.

This is the first time ISIS has claimed responsibility for an attack on US soil.

Shortly before the attack, Mateen, who was born in New York to Afghan parents, called 911 and pledged allegiance to ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, law enforcement officials told NBC News

And the terror group's Amaq news agency said on Sunday the Islamist militant group was responsible for the shooting.

Hello JIC? Paging Mr. smartest guy in the room... Willing to change your tune yet?

  • John & the other liberals don't change their tune.  They ridicule & belittle their opposition.  Then they change the "facts" to fit their viewpoint.  Kinda like Katie Couric making a "documentary ".

So, we have a radical Islamic extremist, that had been on a watch list, who was employed as a private security guard (guessing with his training he could identify soft targets), everyone, parents included, said he was nutter than squirrel shid, and he was still able to get an assault rifle, legaly.
    No signals there for trouble.
I am just shocked something way more terrible has not happened already.
Oh wait, it has. 911. We "knew" about them as well.
This may not be related, I don't give a flying fvk. People knew about this guy and allowed him to purchase an assault weapon.
Do you really think he was going to use it to try and score big on Boone and Crockett with those small deer in Florida?
Allowing people like that dipshid to get an assault rifle is a crime.

Why does it matter what kind of gun he got???? He was interviewed by the FBI TWICE.... He shouldn't have been allowed to get any sort of gun or even live here.....

The people in san bernandino were afraid to report their neighbor because of profiling and scared they would get in trouble.

The boss of this loser yesterday was afraid to fire him because of his behavior and the consequences that might come with profiling....

I think I see where the problem lies...

This thread is getting almost as wild as last night's exchange on the Rockwood thread.  ;)
Ya....not really. Lump threads have little meat on the bones & can be laughed at. Even if they're dumb.
Exchange?  Liberals & Conservatives not seeing eye to eye?  Seems pretty status quo.  Although I find myself reading many comments both Liberal & Conservative and SMH.
These were AMERICANS enjoying a night out and brutally murdered by an extremist. I purposely left the parts out that the victims were LBGT in a Gay Nightclub and the shooter was an Muslim Extremist that had pledged allegiance to ISIS. I doesn't matter where you fit politically. When those details are added it changes your perspective. Bottom line the A$$hole that did the killing here had Immense Hate in his heart and was American born and fanatical.  And sadly he robbed Americans of their last breath.
Military strikes are based off of intelligence. Not just at random targets because they're Muslims. And this is a very different kind of war with the enemy being everywhere. There are Muslim communities in America. So what, do we declare Martial Law?

It seems like making it illegal for people on the terrorist watch list to buy guns is something everyone could agree on, whether you're conservative or liberal, I don't know.

I agree he shouldn't have gotten any gun at all, but the laws in place didn't work, that's where part of the problem lies.  The system for background checks doesn't seem to be working or someone isn't doing their job.  That needs to be fixed and shouldn't take more laws to do it.

I'd agree if there was some sort of due process to be put on the list. Now you just need to meet some loose criteria to get on either list and you simply can't take someone's rights away off a hunch.

Yeah, seems reasonable to me - fair enough.  I don't think we should be putting people on the list just because they happen to be Muslims, for example.

I haven't had a security clearance for many years, but when I got my first one, friends and neighbors were interviewed. I had to have a clearance to work in secure facilities even when need to know prevented me from seeing some information.
This man not only was able to purchase firearms after being a  person of interest to the FBI, but was employed as security by a government contractor. As a contractor working security was he not vetted?
I do not favor profiling. It is wrong, but in this case and many others similar mentally ill people are able to buy firearms without problems.
I fully realize a lot of gang violence utilizes firearms obtained illegally i.e. stolen. This mass murderer did not steal firearms, but instead walked into a store and legally bought them.
When my wife bought her last handgun, she filled out a form and a background check was run before she could leave with the gun. I do not remember that much when buying a long gun but I could have forgotten. Walmart did require an employee to carry the rifle out the door. I had no problem with either. I realize I am giving up some amount of freedom but this does give some protection. The Patriot Act, a brainchild of very much extreme liberal named Bush, took away far more freedom.

wow!  did i used to believe in gun laws?  I don't anymore!  with the tyrannical US gov't we have and militarized police, I am now a staunch supporter of 2nd amendment, but for EVERYONE! not just SOME folks the way it is now (hint, hint) If they try to say crazy people people can't have guns, heck, they will just say we all a little crazy, and ain't we all tho?
