OT - Why are gas prices fluctuating so much?

I know many of you were frustrated by my comments about levels of education, but i didn't mean any disrespect.

That being said, I'm sure that someone out there has much more knowledge about this than me.

Anyone know why the prices are jumping around so much? and maybe its regional, but prices have gone up 20 cents in a matter of a day and a half.

Down 20 cents here in the last month.  $1.88 yesterday.
  • Dunno. But I remember when prices got high, we were told it was all Obama's fault.

Saudis are flooding the market with oil.  Also the Irainian nuke deal allows Iran to put approx. 500,000 bbls/day (1 bbl = 42 gal) soon.  The over supply of oil is driving price down, but killing US oil production and jobs.  The Sauds are trying to keep market share and don't care if oil goes to $10.  Their lifting cost is roughly $2-4 per barrel.

Long story short EIA feels oil will not be returning to $80/bbl until 2018.

If you look at oil/gas companies in U.S., the majority are down by 40% or more in value.  Which is adding to the bear market in the investment community, most investors are pulling out of the commodity industry.

It has been all over the place here. I paid like 1.89 a gallon 2 weeks ago then a couple days later it was 2.20 now it's back down to a little over 2. The rich people in power probably changed from short to long on their oil investments and the prices rose.

I used to work at a gas station when I was younger...

The tanks in the ground are bought on prior days, or hedged.  Often times when price goes up the station makes money because they bought it at a lower price.  Most stations aren't in the game to lose money and will quickly raise prices and slow to lower them.

The only thing that forces them to drop price is the neighboring gas station getting market share, or your business.

The prices of oil directly effects the price of gasoline.  There are days at the pump when price changes due to the commodity price swing.

Go to finance.yahoo and on the main page in the middle left you'll see Oil.  It's price will swing $2 on different days depending on world/market conditions.  That swing is trying to be captured daily at the pumps so business don't go bankrupt.  Thus, the consumer sees the swing at the pump.

i would bet theres more of a political ploy with the oil industry, keystone, and the whitehouse all playing games =) oil is so low that companies are laying off, downsizing, etc. one of my best customers will be gone dec 16 with 33 jobs moving to louisiana. thats a small dent compared to the industies losses

  • Fish: come closer to boston. 1.99 here.

If the whitehouse controlled the economy and gas prices, no president would ever lose re-election

Price of oil is not directly correlated to gasoline.   Just saying....

At the time of this post GasBuddy shows a Gulf station in Biddeford, Maine selling regular for $1.99/gallon.

Next lowest price was at the BJ's in Bangor at $2.05/gallon.

its cheaper up in maine as well but still over two. didnt say that but my guess is the middle of the country will pay more because the keystone guys are getting even about recent  whitehouse policy =)

all my trucks are down in methuen mass, sunoco and mobile are the more distributed stations for fleet coverage.  its always been odd to me that maine is cheaper for gas as its just harder to get it distributed up there. methuen is showing 2.13 to 2.19 right now on gasbuddy so its dropping a little

I did a double take yesterday when I saw diesel at $2.21. Pulled right in to fill up. 10 days ago when I filled up I paid $3.12 and was happy it was that low - you see this is Illinois where the taxes are eschewed to nail the trucking business!

Here in California we get screwed because of 'Winter' & Summer mixes. I see some of you can mentioning gas prices of $1.89 and $2.20 - I only wish I can remember petrol being that low. Right now, as I drive around .. the price of gas is in the $2.89 range, but more common is in spring when gas shoots to over $4.00 dollars a gallon.

But all-in-all ... maybe things are fair, we got tri tip in plentiful here in So Cal and you get low gas prices. lol

this is a very simple business tactic, customer pisses you off or takes advantage of you, you smile, shake their hand, and then find a way to get even or ahead without the customer knowing. business as usual, im sure you understand why you dont piss your waitress off when placing an order =)

theres the other side of the coin, my tuck mileage drops from 17 mpg to 11 with the the change to winter gas and that really hits the wallet

I live near the boarder of Indiana and Michigan. The Indiana prices tend to jump when there are sports events nearby, or holidays. Otherwise, they have seasonal changes that vary w. the broad market. The stations in Michigan fluctuate on a weekly basis. I.E. always buy on Wed., not the weekend. Overall, they tend to be somewhat more stable than Indiana.

I suspect it may have to do w. distribution. The refineries in Indiana serve the Chicago market, which is always high in summer, and puts lots of demand on the system. The Michigan pumps near here seem to be fed by a company from Ohio.

Note, even .20 is about 10% of a gallon just now, and less than 5% when gas was higher not long ago. That's similar to a couple penny change in a gallon back when I started buying gas for myself around '70.

Historic note. My neighborhood had 4 gas stations in the late 50s - early 60s, with another 3 or 4 competitors within a half mile. Back then, there would be price wars of 10th of a cent. Just now, there are no pumps, although 1 newer place looks like it is being re-built.

taxes on fuel vary by state and @SoCalTim real estate cost factors in as well - the cost of doing business in LA, SD and SF is always going to be higher than say, Texas.

Sounds like you're getting predetonation - if you don't have an ECU with anti-knock sensors you can retard your timing or bump up to a higher octane.  That's really bad for your engine.

I wish I was paying $1.89 / Gallon, here in Canada we pay on average right now $1.00 / Litre , 3.785 Litres = 1 Gallon.  That is about $7.15 per Gallon!!!  Go figure!
