OT Rum drinkers?
Any rum drinkers out there? I'm a purist and drink most things straight or on the rocks. Bourbon is my go to. Had a client in town from Barbados the last 3 days. He brought me a bottle of Mt. Gay Barbadian rum. You can get it here but he says it's less alcohol and not nearly as good. He also brought me some Pyrat rum from Jamaica. Both are outstanding. Almost good enough to make me switch from bourbon. Any other good rums I should be looking for?

Cool. Thanks. Ron Zacapa is good stuff too. It is sweet. I have one or two and then switch back to four roses. Like I just did. Happy Friday

Deployed to PR several times over and we always loaded the belly of the bird with Rum when we came back to the States. Rum was cheaper than milk there and 151 was cheaper than lighter fluid for the disposable grill. I will occasionally have a sniff of PR Rum. More often than not I prefer Bourbon.LBGE 2013 & MM 2014Die Hard HUSKER & BRONCO FANFlying Low & Slow in "Da Burg" FL

I picked up a bottle of this a few weeks ago. It's rum finished in a bourbon barrell. It's sweet and has a strong vanillia note. Pretty good in my book.Franklin, TNLarge BGE+PSWoo2

Well, at least my liquor store has it specially aged in bourbon barrels.Franklin, TNLarge BGE+PSWoo2

He also said I needed to come to Barbados and try the rum myself. Stay in his guest house...which is on the beach. And the best part, at dinner last night he asks me "have you heard of these "great big eggs" I just bought one and I'm experimenting".Fish, Hunt, Cook....anything else?

Lol. You are so right Jason. This dude is like the best guy on the face of the planet. More generous than @nolaegghead or @sgh...Maybe. he is serious about me and the family visiting. And he does nothing half way. He said "if I'm not there I'll leave the keys in the boat". No lie.Fish, Hunt, Cook....anything else?

We do the Sandals thing every few years and they have Appleton in the rooms. When we got married in Jamaica they gave us a few bottles lol still have one. I have a good friend that grew up in Jamaica and he turned us into Sangster bananna flavored and it is amazing.

I have a bottle of Capt Morgan's Spiced in the cabinet, but I don't drink it. I use it to fill the stone pit in Grilled Peaches while grilling (and I completely missed doing that this season, argh!)___________

I had a very bad experience with Rum at a young age. Drinking half a bottle in a short period of time turned out to be a really bad idea. Thing was I really enjoyed the taste. I find that the taste not very appealing now.....nearly 30 years later.
I do enjoy a good Tequila and I'm partial to Basil Hayden's -
I'm a huge rum drinker and collector. Depending what type/taste of rum you like will determine what rum to buy. I like a sweeter rum and not so woody/oakey. I have so many in my collection that I have yet to try (key word yet). I buy mine depending on internet reviews and rum tasters opinions.
I would recommend the following to start.
Ron Zacapa XO
El Dorado 21 year or 15 year
Plantation 20th Anniversary rum
For the price these are hard to beat
Zaya 12 year
Diplomatico Reserva Exclusiva
A rum that will break your piggy bank but worth every penny. I'm watching this one at the liquor store because they usual start to discount this when the stock runs out.El Dorado 25 year
A few in my collection

@YukonRon I was typing my reply as you posted your and like I said for the money Zaya is hard to beat.
-
I'll agree Zaya is extremely good. I splurged and bought a bottle way back and it's now one of my favorites.

My BIL brought it up to us from NOLA. He had to dump some stuff prior to heading overseas. We drank what you see is missing, waiting on him to return to finish."Knowledge is Good" - Emil Faber

I went to college with a Bacardi. Super nice chap fro Puerto Rico. I like the Myer's dark rum for various drinks in the summer. Pusser's Navy Rum is pretty fun too.Large Big Green Egg in a nest. North Shore of Boston.

I always stock up on Mount Gay when we go on a cruise. Good stuff and dirt cheap down there.

I'll have to keep an eye out for some of these. I'm usually slumming it with the Kraken and Sailor Jerry.L, S, MM, Mini

Here's my best bottle. Gift from my rum aficionado friend. Good stuff.
