Great looking table.  I'd remove the fire ring, fire box and dome and ask a friend to help me insert the egg into the table.  Take advantage  of the stripped down egg to clean it and do a little maintenance.  Another option is to use a pottery sling similar to the one in this Amazon link.  I believe RPG uses this method.

Man that is a beautiful table!

Since it is an XL you may want to consider taking the dome off. I would definitely have two people but the problem is there isn't a great way for two people to lift together with the dome in place.

Which came first the chicken or the egg?  I egged the chicken and then I ate his leg.

Buy a case of beer.  Invite a friend over.  Disassemble the XL with buddy's help.  Drink a beer.  Reassemble egg, while drinking more beer.  Just don't get too sloshed, that's an expensive piece of ceramic.

  • I know the XL is heavier than than a large, but I put two larges in one table with help. I took the insides out and thought about taking the dome off, but I had a few guys come over so we just lifted them up and put them in.

    Nice table!

  • Cover the edge/lip of your table with something hardy in case you scrape your Egg along that spot when hefting it up to drop it in place. I have a scrape between the front edge of my table and the Egg hole where the bare ceramic edge caught the table.

Fortunately, this table was only meant to be temporary, so my feelings weren't hurt. You wouldn't want to ding up that table before even getting to use it, though.

you can cook it pretty much the way you would in the oven but here is a great tday roasted turkey cook. the writeup looks exhausting but it pretty much breaks down into stuff with arromatic herbs, cover with wine and butter, cook

That's one of the most gorgeous tables I've seen -- great job!
  • Nice table eh

I'd completely disassemble the egg and have a friend help lift the base into the table.  Just be real careful not to ding the table on the way in.  You can probably do the dome yourself but if you have your buddy there you might as well have him help with that as well and then you can put the bands back on.

Yes sir we bleed scarlet and grey in this house. Personally I would not take it apart though. Getting the dome lined up might not be fun. I would lower it in just like a coffin with four guys on ropes

When my eggs were delivered (XL and Med) they were already assembled.  Only the ceramics were not inside yet.  I watched how the two guys placed the eggs in my table so if need be I could take them out and follow their example.  Now these two guys were not that big and not overly muscled.

They installed both sizes the same way.  One guy used the hinge mechanism as a hand hold, being careful not to put any pressure on the lid that would force it down.  The other put his hand inside the egg at the front and used the air hole as a grip point.  The other hand he placed on the bottom until it was over the hole in the table. Then still using the grip on the air hole he released the bottom for a second and started it down through the table hole before re-griping the bottom of the egg as they lowered it into the hole.

I have since used this technique with my son to remove and replace both of my eggs in the table after making some shelf adjustments.  I am the one that had the front of the egg.

BTW, I am 6'1", 175 lbs and 67 yrs old.  Not muscled by any means.

It is not that difficult, you just have to pay attention to what you are doing.

Nice table and good luck.  Time to put the egg in and get to cooking.

I DREAD when I get to that point.   The XL is massive.
I'll gut it and WILL take the lid off.   That's the only way that makes any sense to me other than using a cherry picker!
  • Sorry I don't have any helpful comments, but I just want to say your table is awesome!

  • I wouldn't bother disassembling the egg.

Is the final resting spot for the table under the eaves of your house? When I did my table it was under the eaves. I fabricated a picking eye and lagged it into the eaves. Made a basket sling out of paracord and used a mimi 1/4 ton chain come-long to pick up the egg. Raised the egg up off the BGE rollers it was on and rolled my table right underneath and lowered back in place. I do a lot of rigging so it was not a big deal but make sure you're comfortable with your efforts.

Cut the paracord out after setting table.

You have a wooden table top so there should be plenty of room where you cut the hole for the cord to clear.

Welcome!
