Anyone even think about all the defenseless animals Cecil killed? I am Kidding of Course.    ;)

I am not going to pass judgement on this man until it is proven he did something illegal.  I would not kill a Lion, unless it was licking his lips while looking at me, but that does not mean it is not a desirable activity for others. As long as it is legal, and the technique used to kill the animal was legal, I don't think this is a news item.

Should this guy be getting death threats over this?

The guides are probably who everyone should be going after as they are the ones that devised the plan to lure the animal out into hunt able land.

I just wonder if a lot of the outcry comes from jealousy.  Jealousy over the fact this dentist could afford $50k to go on a hunt.  I have heard people claim it is an exorbitant amount of money to spend on such an activity.  News flash Doctors and Dentists make a lot of money.  To the wealthy, money has a different value than it does for the less affluent.  Wish I knew what it felt like to have the ability to even consider a vacation for $50k.

Money/jealousy - maybe I give people too much credit but I can't fathom how anyone would project feigned anger from killing a famous lion because they're jealous he can spend 50k on a vacation.

$50k is more than  a majority of the people in this country makes in a year.....if you are struggling to get by and you hear this guy dropped that kind of coin on a hunt......hmmmm I think a good number of people could jump on the bandwagon.

Imagine if you can he only paid $500.  Would you be any less incensed?   I guess you're not, so maybe this is a question for other people who think he's deserving of the attention because they think killing threatened or endangered species is wrong.  If he was a starving villager and ate the animal, I think we'd all be thinking he didn't know better and didn't have a choice and it wouldn't be as bad.

I grew up a hunter too and still am to this day but this is pathetic. About like high fence elk hunting or some crap where some jack wang that has barely ever hunted walks up to a tamed animal in shorts and tennis shoes. gut shoots it with a bow from 20 yards and watchs it bleed out.

He also knew it was not right, and he knew exactly what animal he shot.

Well I just read half a dozen articles and they all said they discovered the collar after he was dead (and presumably before they cut off his head).  You must not be watching real news. Fox, right?  You know that is an editorial channel.
Aren't they all editorial channels? I have not yet in my 55 years seen a news channel that was objective. Not picking sides, just sayin

@Jabam - There are journalism rules that are taught and followed, to varying degrees by the networks.   Editorials should be defined as such, not disguised as news.  Not all news stations are equal.  None are great.

This is a survey from from news directors around the country.  You can read the survey data HERE.  This is out of a 4 point scale on the journalistic quality ratings of news:

I have a buddy that has been on these big game hunts dozens of times.  His house looks like the Field Museum in Chicago.  I don't get it.......but he doesn't get why I have three BGE's.

Couple things.......they have proven that managed hunts and prize fees actually help the population of endangered and at-risk animals.  If the rich business man from Europe or the US is willing to pay $50K to shoot one, it makes the locals try to protect them from the poachers.  If the natives have motivation to poach the poachers, then that's going to help more than anything else.  Otherwise, what do they care?  A lot of these people are hungry and dying--they're trying to keep their children alive, not the lions.

The poachers are the real criminals.  This guy thought he was on a legit hunt.  He paid the cash, had the paperwork, and had probably had no idea that this thing was lured off the reserve.  The guy has multiple trips over there, he knows the drill.  Now his life and business are ruined because he got scammed.

I'm all for conservation and am not necessarily for shooting anything that isn't plentiful.  But this public backlash on this guy is ridiculous.  Vigils and protests outside his house and business?!?!?!?!  C'mon!!  How can ONE friggin animal from 6000 miles get people this riled up, yet somebody gets capped in the city overnight and it's lucky if gets a 10 second snippet on the local news??  There is some serious bad $hit going down in this county and it's not just murders--gov corruption, drug trade, etc.  If people got half as fired up over this stuff than one dead lion, then maybe some things here on the home front would get fixed.

Yeah, it sucks the lion died......it really does.  But there's a lot more important stuff to worry about.  This guy is going to pay out the behind for letting these guys scam him, so take the candles and bongo drums to somewhere that it matters.

    Perfect!

That's because they're a business, and their business is to sell advertising.  They have a demographic to sell that advertising to, so that's who they cater to.  Its not that offensive if you know that going into it.  Better than state/gov controlled media......could be like North Korea.  BTW, watched "the interview" on Netflix the other night--absolutely hilarious.

So a survey of news directors sets it all straight? Give me a break. I listen to all the news with the understanding that it is all skewed one way or
    the other.

I would kinda equate that type of hunting to mountaineering - if it's in your blood then it becomes all consuming. Kinda like those climbers that died on Everest trying to beat an incoming storm....they knew not to continue for the summit but they had trained, made the trek, spent all that money etc.  To me it's like this guy. He has a passion for it,  trains for it,  spends excessive amounts of money on it and allows his better judgement to be clouded by the "thrill of the hunt". I don't get it but then again -  it never blew my pant leg up so how could I?
I doubt he considered his indiscretions would be brought to light much less made known internationally.  He made this bed.

JIC is that Billy Ray Cyrus?

No it's a political hit. One of Trump's Sons that big game hunts.

I follow up with this. (you know I love ya JIC  ). I'm not a Trump backer. I'm all in for Marco. Hillary is and has always been swarmy. I mean if we're gonna politicize let's do this ****!

I'm not into politics and generally abstain from political discussions, but it helps your cause tremendously if you spell the president's name correctly when trying to send a message. Captions and poor grammar like this just make my skin crawl as the side it represents comes off as ignorant and uneducated, regardless of the message.

I guess my outlook is that the guy's a f&cktard for killing the lion. No need in it...however, the uproar over this while so many other more important things go uncontested or ignored.

We must remove that rebel flag... Now.

Considering the site,  shouldn't we be discussing "Low and Slow" or "Cowboy" style?  :)

Nola I am not up in arms about the cost  myself.  Whether he paid $5 or $50k, I was just citing a possible cause for come peoples angst over this incident.

Not that it matters but is the Lion "threatened" or "Endangered" as you state?  If threatened then it is not Endangered, then I ask why include "endangered" in your summary of the situation?  A form of sensationalism?   ;)

To learn more, I researched the animals listing.  It seems the US Gov has listed the animal as "threatened" in effort to stop Americans from hunting Lions.  It seems there is no effort or such listing in Africa.  As usual our socialist government has caved in to special interest groups.

Safe to assume a young fan was Born Free and a big fan of the Lion King.  The youngster  grew up and decided to defend the African Lion and got the ear our Granola eating leaders.....(I think it is safe to rip on Granola on this site because it can't be Smoked, BBQ'd or seared).

Now the same special interest group is likely responsible for blowing this out of proportion and ruining a man's life prior to being charged with a crime......

What is more wrong paying to "hunt" a lion (in this case it was more like Killing a lion) or Crucifying this man, his family and all the people that work for him......
