No power + booze - kids + egg = pulled pork

Well after fixing a leak at my house today I packed up for the in laws in Augusta Ga for the 4th. My duty other than boozing and swimming was pulled pork on FILs egg. No sweat. Well arrived and there was no power. 5 hours later still no power. Family went to neighbors house that has power. I stayed back to sleep on the porch with the egg. Ever try to trim, rub, and cook a butt with no lights? Me neither. Just me and my cell phone flashlight, beer and egg. Pics later. Burp

I almost skipped this thread because of the math, glad I didn't.  Looks like a memorable story shaping up.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION TO THIS MATTER

No big deal. I do almost all my egg cooks in the dark. Even in the summer with DST. I don't like to cook so I often put it off until I can't stand it any more. Tonight, for example, it's 9:45 and I just finished eating. Poor lighting on my patio, but I have a small flashlight that fits nicely between my teeth. No problem. :)

I hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!

Not so much the cooking as the complete darkness while trimming and rubbing the meat (queue the pervs!) in someone else's kitchen you are not used to on someone elses egg. Should be interesting

Mighty kind of you man. Hopefully power comes on soon and I get a childless night of great sleep. Would love to be on a float in the pool sipping a Bloody Mary when they arrive back in the AM with the egg chugging along. Thanks again for the offer. I would mind sleeping on your porch under that pergola!

No light?  Light something on fire.  That should help :)

In the house while I am prepping? That is a great idea...... Not out of the equation if the cooler wins tonight. Right now I am kicking its ass

That is interesting Michael. My last 12 years as a working stiff meant that I seldom got home much before 7:30 - 8:00. Even with a just one toddy-for-the-body I seldom got supper on before 8:30 - 9:00. I know some neighbors never understood that - but so be it! Even after retiring some 11 years ago we are late eaters! I will NEVER understand the mind set of some retired folks of eating supper at 3:30 in the afternoon - early bird savings or not!  =)

No kidding! OTOH I understand their 3:30 supper was after Happy Hour for them at 10AM! "Cocky-tails" at 10AM makes me gag even at the thought!

5am update. Woke up on the porch in the rain with the alarm blaring. Power back on!!! Time to load her up in the rain. Head hurts. Attached pic was my "rub job" in the dark. Went with Bad Byron's. To be continued...

    Nice rub job @Chubbs.

@Carolina_Q, try one of these, much easier on the teeth!

Well, "spa-Peggy" is kind of like spaghetti. I'm not sure what Peggy does different, if anything. But it's the one dish she's kind of made her own.

LOL - Don't get me wrong - I love a good Bloody Mary, but I was specifically recalling the routine of a retired couple I used to work with. After they moved to FL they routinely started drinking martinis at 10 AM sharp and knowing them I'm sure they had 3 down before 11:30 and were probably tied in a dog knot until "supper" at 3:30 and still blurry eyed blitzed!

Man this thing is flying. 182IT in 5.5 hours 275 dome. Praying for a late stall. Hasn't had a stall yet. Was hoping for day drinking by egg but might be eating way earlier than thought.

Might be a boring ending if the pork doesn't slow down. Had some friends coming over for the pool but pouring rain.

Looking for the finish.  If it gets done fast, FTC and pretend its on the egg.  That should buy you another 3-4 hrs easy.  Nobody has to know.

I would rather light a candle than curse your darkness.

Any time you wake up on a porch in the rain, good things are bound to follow.

  • I say that loosely based on experience. It wasn't a porch but the rest fits nicely.

Ha ha. I bet. I find it mildly amusing that the rain didn't wake you but I do understand. I can't let you drink alone this morning so....
