An article in the New Yorker titled "The Best Cookbooks of the Century So Far" lists ten that in the authors estimation are particularly noteworthy.Was pleasantly surprised to see that one book in particular made the cut:
“Franklin Barbecue: A Meat-Smoking Manifesto” by Aaron Franklin and Jordan Mackay (2015)
The authors thoughts on the book:There are a handful of conventional recipes in this book—a few sauces, a coleslaw, some beef ribs, your usual barbecue accoutrements. But the big one in “Franklin Barbecue,” the singular one this book exists to document, is the one for the Austin pitmaster’s legendary smoked brisket. The actual brisket recipe fills eight pages late in the book, but the two hundred or so pages that come before are, arguably, as essential to the process. With the reverent intensity of the true believer, Aaron Franklin delivers an almost comically sweeping exercise in obsession and precision: if you want to make Franklin Barbecue–quality barbecue, you can’t just buy a hunk of meat and light a fire. You need to build a smoker and learn how to make it purr, you need a wood guy, you need to learn how to manipulate flames and air. The great lie of most restaurant cookbooks is the promise that you and I can do it at home. Like Chang’s frozen foie-gras torchon, Franklin’s barbecue comes with a hard truth: you probably can’t. Previous owner of the house had 10 or so kids. They weren't too kind with the garage entry door. I tried saving it. I spent 5+ hours removing, sanding, filling, and priming it. (Good side of door)
I used a sanding disc on my angle grinder to remove the paint back down to steel. Unfortunately the heat of the grinder slightly warped the steel on the door when sanding it. (Should have known better) Slight warping wasn't a deal breaker as it was the garage side of the door. I used paint stripper on the inside house portion of the door. (No warping) I put on a couple coats of primer on the wrapped side to see what I was working with. It was a no go. I'd have to look at the warped door everytime walking in from the garage. Probably not noticeable to anyone else but me. I hit my limit trying to save a door though. Time for plan B....
I went to Menards and talked with an employee about replacing the door. It took 1.5 hours and two forklifts to get down the door I needed. The 3 doors they had in stock were either scratched or chipped. I walked out the door empty handed. What a waste of time. I'm glad I did walk out empty handed. The dimensions of the door the employee told me I needed were wrong. I double checked the rough opening and door sizing chart online and what the Menards employee told me was wrong. I needed a standard 32×80 door and not an oddball 34×80 door like he said.
So I go back to Menards and and grab a 32×80 steel exterior door what I need. I get it home and out of the box. I soon realize the depth of the jamb isn't going to work. What steel exterior door only has a 4 9/16" jamb? So its back to Menards for a third time. I go back and get the 32x80 and 6" 9/16 jamb I need. Which is still an 1/8" too small but the closest door I could work with. I took the brickmolding off and need to make a 1/8" filler strip for behind the brickmold to make the jamb sit flush with interior wall trim. Always something.
I got the door squared up late last night. I need to finish it up this afternoon. All I wanted to do is fix some dents in the door. Now it's a project....

Last evening threw together a simple meal. Went to the market and grabbed some fresh produce and put together some simple shrimp and veggie packs to put on the grill. Too easy and good not to do again.
