Goode Co BBQ in Houston?

Taking the kid to visit Rice University in a couple weeks.  Heard through the grapevine that Goode Co. BBQ is worth a visit.  Anybody been there?  Is it all that?

It's been years since we ate there, but it was good then.  Maybe even better now.  Rice is a top notch university.  It would be a good choice.

  • I have always though Goode Co was a little lacking, but I am a big fan of Rudy's Country Store and BBQ.  Best of luck with your campus visit.

Goode Co is just ok - I'd skip it.  Right in houston you'd be better off w Rays ... I'm looking to make short ride to Killens though ....

I spent a year in Houston over 2 weeks at the end of last summer. The best places I found were Gatlin's (near downtown), and Killens in Pearland. Both were excellent. Killens actually has 2 places - 1 is the BBQ place, and the other is a steak house. Both are excellent. There is a wait for the BBQ place (1-2 hrs), and reservations are a must for the steak house. The BBQ place sells out, and closes in the early afternoon - ask how I know. I tried a couple other places, but they weren't in the same league. Austin is awesome if you have some extra time!!

Nothing special at Goode Co.  I am from NJ and this was my first "real" texas BBQ. Dried up brisket.
Medium, and XL eggs in Galloway NJ.  Just outside of Atlantic City.

Never really cared for their Q, their seafood place OTOH is really good and close to Rice. My favorite in Houston is Pizzatoli's for spares. Enjoy the visit to Rice my daughter is waiting to hear from them and then will make her final decision.

Goode Co. is a Houston landmark, but I wouldn't eat their brisket.

My favorite Houston place is a pop up - Blood Brothers BBQ (https://twitter.com/bloodbrosbbq).  They turn up at various bars/breweries with their smoker and crank out great brisket, beef ribs, andouille and other stuff.  This Saturday evening, they are cooking at Buffalo Bayou Brewing's Texas Independence Day party.

    Agreed on Pizzatola's for ribs.

Having lived in Houston for over 60 years and been on many cooking teams I would highly recommend Goode Company BBQ!  Jim Goode is a great guy, his BBQ is excellent, and it is maybe 5 minutes from Rice University.  Another BBQ joint not too far from Rice is Luling City on Richmond Ave.  They too are excellent.  PS- Rice is a great University! If your kid can get in he or she is one very smart Kid- good luck.

There are only 3 places worth a visit in the Houston area.

    Killen's BBQ
    CorkScrew BBQ
    Gatlin's BBQ
Just a hack that makes some $hitty BBQ....
