OT - Photos displaying the wrong way

I did some research on this issue and since I have a problem with it and have seen others with the same issue here and at my site, I figured I would post what I found out about this issues to help everyone.

I figured out what is going on and the 'simplest' way to resolve the issue for those of you affected by it. This might get a little technical but I hope it helps. It seems that the way you take a photo with a mobile device (phone/tablet), has a lot to do with it.

But it looks right on my phone? Yes it does. The reason is because you phone knows 'how' you took the picture, so it will display it to you like that when viewing it in you gallery program. Upload to a site that uses EXIF (like here and other places) and it will display using that information. So if the EXIF data says 90 degrees, the photo displays sideways.

There are 2 ways that you can resolve this issue:

1. Turn your phone sideways (landscape mode) when taking pictures

2. (For existing photos) You can open your photo using whatever program you have on your phone (Android has Gallery), Click to edit the photo and choose 'Crop'. You do not really have to crop it, just move the crop window back and forth and click 'Save'.

This resolved the issue for those who had the problem.

@Zarcon- I don't understand any of that. But thanks for the explanation just the same.

Location- Just "this side" of Biloxi, Ms.

    Status- Standing by.

The greatest barrier against all wisdom, the stronghold against knowledge itself, is the single thought, in ones mind, that they already have it all figured out.

HAHA @SGH - I figured it would be a little too technical.. The only thing that you should worry about is this:

If your photos end up sideways:

    2. (For existing photos) You can open your photo using whatever program you have on your phone (Android has Gallery), Click to edit the photo and choose 'Crop'. You do not really have to crop it, just move the crop window back and forth and click 'Save'

I appreciate the work-around @Czar-con.  I would like to see the LARGE VENDED FORUM (yes, you VANILLA) fix their frikkin' code.  The orientation is stored in the image metadata and I understand vanilla probably follows EXIF standards, but there's some fixes they can apply, I know they can because initial images are "fixed" when the images are expanded.  It's a developer bug on this forum.  We're not paying them so our complaints don't have much traction.  But there you go.

On the contrary, we have already paid them.  I'm sure the cost of maintaining this site is priced into every Egg, even if it is marginal.

@JohnInCarolina - that's like saying (*gasp*) we're actually paying for the medical care of uninsured (through taxes and higher insurance) because they eventually do get emergency treatment.  Let me clarify this with - as far as I know we don't withhold life-saving emergency medical treatment yet.  I'm sure this will change when we build park-bench cities for grampa and grandma. People need an end game and death by neglect on a park bench seems to be acceptable.

Don't get me wrong, I appreciate your interest in discussing our societal obligations to the sick and the poor, as well as perhaps the heavily inebriated. The left turn was just a bit too abrupt there.

I know what you mean.  I think the more interesting point, in general, is how our society is getting more "me me me" and less "we're a country of Americans".  Lets act together and start following Weaton's Law.  Hypocritical, I know, of me saying that.  I act out.

Liberte vs Egalite - it is the American struggle.

Agree.   After all the abortion clinics close, the disenfranchised unwanted grown children will vote them open again.
