purchased 16" carbon steel wok with D handles from the Wok Shop in San Fran on recent visit.  got home ready to purchase PS Woo as my goto everything device, only to find out that it is now not recommended for wokking. although I know the spider works well for a wok,  has made me rethink possible wok configurations.  please share your experiences/thoughts:

# wok on spider

# wok placed directly in fire ring  (suspect airflow an issue)

# wok placed directly in fire ring using something (ie. ceramic feet) as spacer between top of wok and fire ring.

# wok placed directly in fire ring using firebricks placed on coals (should elevate wok and create air flow at fire ring)

# remove fire ring and place wok directly on coals (suspect stability an issue)

# using weber kettle and placing directly on coals

# using bottom half of weber smokey mountain and placing directly on charcoal ring

I use my wok on a spider, works perfectly.
Can't say if your other options would work, but if your looking to save cash, I say try one of your free options and see what happens.

I use a 12" or 14" on my large, medium or small depending on what I am doing.
I have a spider and my woks are either "D" metal rings or handles, wood or metal.
Just measured the large in the dark and it appears that the inner diameter of the large fire ring is right at 16".  Since I do not have a 16" to try,  I suggest you try it and see how it fits on the firering.
Most good oriental commercial kitchens have a ring that the wok sits directly on and there is no air gap between the wok and resting area.  If the 16" fits on the firering, just be careful when lifting it as you create the potential for a flash back just as  a hot fire will get you when you lift the top of the BGE.
If you have a flat bottom wok just set it on the grate and wok away, if round see if you can get a wok ring and it will work also.

They (not sure who they are) make stands for use on gas stove tops. maybe you can find one at a local store. I'll round up a pic of the one I was using. I bought my 14" wok at a yard sale so I'm sorry I can't point you in a better direction.
