@Ozzie_Isaac great job on the certs.  If SSI is anytime PADI, (I am sure they are close) the rescue diver cert was hands down the best and most rewarding I have taken.  The last exercise of finding, surfacing, equipment removal, and rescue breathing for the swim back to shore, then all the CPR, O2 administration, and defibrillator exercise all combined was exhausting- but was great.  Doing it in a 5MM and 40F air and 3x degree water in a quarry sucked, but it was still great.

Dive lights.  I have had a few and to this point have all been twist on/off. All eventually leaked even though I was very careful how much I twisted it. I just picked up an Orca torch, and so far it is much better than my other lights. Only have anbout 10 dives with it, but I anm happy so far.
And I am glad there is another diver out there that uses a light during the day.  As soon as I am in the water, I get it in hand.  I love doing head stands and peering into/under the small deep crevices to find shy critters.

    Great hobby!  Stay safe!

That was a great game!  Unfortunately I turned it on after the fourth pitch of the game and it was already two to zero.

Crazy start set the stage...lightening struck twice in three pitches, against the guy who gave up just three home runs the entire regular season.

The Dodgers are a very good well rounded baseball team but struggle when they have to bring in their relievers. They will run their pitchers longer than any other team in baseball. They Jays have done a good job tiring out their starting pitchers to force them to bring in the relievers. It seems to fall apart shortly later for the Dodgers.

Picked a bad year to put baseball to the sidelines.  Sounds like a great World Series!!

@Sea2Ski I didn't understand why my friends all said you need a flashlight, even if diving during the day.  Then I dove with them - we are always looking under and into the formations to find the cool stuff, flashlight is a must.  Diving is really mind blowing - every layer you zoom in, there is an entire ecosystem.  Sit back and watch whales, sharks, turtles - zoom in and see the fish, crabs, lobster, plants, etc - zoom in further and see all the juvenile fish, shrimp, nudibranch, etc etc.  Always something to look at and see.  Almost like ytou can never be close enough.  Then add in all the crazy camflouge going on, its a fun game to try and spot it all.

I would rather light a candle than curse your darkness.

  • Has been a great series so far!  Before the series I saw odds saying 60% LA / 40% TOR and being a little out of touch thought that was generous to Toronto. But they have really shown they can get on base and around the horn. Significant overlap with Bills fan base too.

Agree, no one expected last year's bottom feeder to get this far, let alone winning it. They have the most come back wins this season...e.g. in ALCS down 0-2 at home, then 2-3 when they left Seattle, then the Springer three-run homer when Mariners were up 3-1 in the seventh inning of Game 7.  In the WS they were down 1-2 after the heart-breaking 18-inning Game 3 loss, I was worried they won't get to play in Toronto again.

It'll be nice if we can wrap up in six but beating Yamamoto is a tall order. May the better team win.

I suspect Yamamoto will pitch on Friday - the Jays can't reliably hit off him and Friday is do or die for the Dodgers. So that will put us onto game 7 with potentially Yesavage pitching and Springer back in play.

I love giving out candy so I'm going to tape the game and watch it later, or maybe pause it for doorbells.

It really is the football season now, there’s a  chill in the air and it’s getting dark at 5pm.   There’s that and the league table about to click over to 10 games played, which is the first genuine milestone about status and condition of teams.  And amongst those ten have been a handful of cup games and international distractions. The cumulative effect for teams with aspiration is, ‘how many fit top quality players have you got?’ because rotation without impairing on field quality is key.  And for background colour, arsenal are top, Wolves are doomed, Villa are the form team - while Liverpool very much are not.

    Saturday

Brighton vs Leeds, sadly this being a home game for the Filthies then they have to be favourite for the win. Dirty Leeds had no trouble despatching an Abysmal West Ham last week, but this is different gravy.  2-1.

Burnley vs Arsenal, two wins on the bounce have given the Clarets hope, and more meaningfully points.  A home win would be a surprise, not a shock. The Gunners are looking consistently solid though, so in reality the plucky Lancastrians will need to scavenge points from elsewhere. 0-2

Palace vs Brentford, big huge massive boring draw written all over it.  The mighty Eagles arrested their recent slump with an eye catching 3-0 against a pale facsimile of Liverpool mid-week in the cup. The Bees are variable, not dangerous nor hapless. 0-0

Fulham vs Wolves, 17th host 20th and that’s at least half a dozen places further south has either intended at this stage.  But, the Cottagers are ravaged with injury and the Old Gold are in all sorts of a mess on the pitch.   Big chance for the visitors to begin the claw-back, but nothing suggests they will do that. Could be a one-goal either way situation, form says 0-0.  OK, 0-1 just because it would heave West Ham right in to the swamp.

Forest vs Man United, to everyone’s disappointment, especially Utd fans who really lean in to moaning about everything, the Red Devils are on the surge.  Forest are not and Sean ‘the red haired Red Adair (of PL football, nothing more life threatening - just to clarify, just to moderate the hero-ification)* Dyche has yet to apply his trademark extinguisher of failure (unlikely to be dynamite, more likely to be an enjoyment sapping highly utilitarian defence first style of football)* 0-1

Spurs vs Chelsea, well aren’t these two the odd couple?  Spurs are devoid of their USP, i.e being all Spursy and that.  The Chels’ have turned in to random assortment of talent and petulance, which is fun for everyone else. 2-2

Liverpool vs Villa, ‘OK lads, take the day off and be ready for the match on Sunday - the second stringers will have enough for Palace’ are the fateful words of Arne Slot in advance for heir 3-0 humiliation by the mighty Eagles mid-week.  OK, so the player who keep losing now should even more pressure in this match against a suddenly very sturdy Villa.  Tricky second album/season strikes for the Reds. 1-2 and misery sustains in the Scouse ranks.

    Sunday

West Ham vs Newcastle, has to be at least 0-2 or Eddie might as well write this season off now.  The Hammers are really bad right now.

Man City vs Bournemouth, another choke last time out from Citeh while the Cherries just can’t help but be good at football.  Pressure on the hosts to show if they’ve got the minerals - and I am to sure they do and it’s 1-2 for me.

    Monday

Sunderland vs Everton, we all know the slump will happen but no-one is sure when but in the interim the Maccems are having whale of a time.  And wouldn’t you just know it, the Toffees arrive in poor form, and just aren’t as good on their travels anyway.  2-0.

*today I am mostly entertained by egregious clarification.

Missed your earlier ask about cold smoking, @zaphod. You may wish to get yourself a pellet maze. Buy some pellets and you’re off to the races for simple, cold smoking. You can cold smoke on the Egg (no charcoal employed) or really in any enclosed space. https://www.amazon.ca/s?k=amazen+pellet+smoker+maze&crid=3E08PZIKQAVKB&sprefix=amazen+pellet+smoker+maze%2Caps%2C302&ref=nb_sb_noss

Lots of info on the forum.
thanks man.  I'll try my local BGE dealer, I like to support the brick & mortar stores when I can - just have to remember to carry items to the car myself or be hit by the freight charge.

I saw your post on putting a cold smoker into a pumpkin tonight - smoked pumpkin flesh will be a good addition to soups and stuff (as well as thrilling the kids).

I hear you. In my case, I wasn’t aware of anywhere carrying the pellet maze locally. Just really sending you the Amazon link for awareness as to the range of options out there.

We’ll see how the pellets do in the pumpkin. I feel like the smoke may be a little too subtle.

There was a lady on the news last night complaining about the methane produced by (iirc) 18M lbs of discarded jack o'lanterns every year, she suggested burying or composting the used pumpkins instead.

Doesn't compost give off the same methane as a pumpkin rotting in the dump?

yeah, it sure does.  I think that she was talking about land fills and the methane build up. Our district land fill has so much methane off gassing that they pipe it across the freeway to greenhouses so that they can heat their cannabis crops.

Or you could feed the pumpkins to cows or the herbivores at the local zoo. Still gets partially converted to methane but some of the carbon is sequestered into big butt hippos.

Not if the pile is regularly turned so the fresh oxygen is provided. This is similar to aerobic sewage treatment plants, they give off carbon dioxide but not methane if properly operated. There are anerobic sewage treatment plants, mainly in the Northeast, that deliberately produce and harvest methane and minimize carbon dioxide at least until the methane is burned. One of my favorite classes in university plus I have built or remodeled a few plants. Add to that previous time on an organic gardening forum. Note: don’t try to compost pumpkin guts unless you want a massive pumpkin patch the next year.

We compost all our pumpkins and barely get any volunteers in the garden.

On an unrelated note, "toasted pumpkin seeds anyone?"

Yes, please. Made three pumpkins worth as I hollowed them out. So good. The kids love ‘em. Dish was full yesterday and the only reason it’s not empty is that I have a modicum of self control.

Did they sing Canada's national anthem when the games were in LA?  This is my first time watching a world series game this year before first pitch.

DVR the whole thing.  Got hosed on the 18 inning game as my recording ended around inning 14.  Same happened on the extended pennant game.
I will give the game a good two hours and then dial it in.

Not sure, haven’t watched them, but I know when VGK plays a Canadian team in hockey in the post season, they do the Canadian anthem.
