Tonight I made sloppy joes on Hawaiian rolls, baked beans and fried hush puppies. Kids said it was the best dinner I’ve ever made. All these decades of attempting to improve my grilling/cooking game, and yet this is the one that takes the cake. 😆
No pics but those hush puppies were actually pretty good. -

This morning, after almost six months, including four separate visits to my local SSA office, untold hours reading and trying to figure out many websites, and nearly twenty hours (I kept track) of sitting "on hold" with about five different "Help" desks... this morning, I finally signed up for Medicare.
This shouldn't be this Jes(^&&*#!!F*C%NGcryinoutloud)($}{(*$!!!! HARD to do!!!
I made this final appointment in May; it was for 9:03 this morning, and the snailmail letter I got said "Please arrive five minutes before your appointment". I checked the office hours and they didn't officially open until 0900, so I arrived about twenty minutes early and noted that there were already about a dozen people milling about the front door, many of them standing in line.
- Current, stupid ME realizes I should've just walked in, and asked the front desk/gate guards if I could go thru security as I had a 9:03 appointment (employees had been walking in all morning.)
- 10-hour younger, even stupider ME thought, well, they'll probably ask the crowd who has an immediate appointment and move us in first, like the airlines do. Poor, naive stupider ME...
The line was allowed in at 0855, glanced at my watch, and when I finally signed in at 0904, I was cursing myself; I didn't put in the pocket change, or my pen this morning, but I did put on a belt and laced shoes, which all had to be removed before the scanner and then put back on before sprinting to the elevator. There were six people ahead of me using the check-in kiosk in the SSA office, and just as soon as I got in that line a side door opened, a guy leaned in and said, "Once again, Scott Buh-Etcher?" I raised my hand and he led me into a hallway, and told me to sit at Window 7; I'd made it!! I was so scared they'd skip over me and I'd have to re-schedule 3 months out again.
He was a nice guy (unlike one of the earlier ones). After typing on his 'pooter awhile he noticed that I had tried to sign up at the end of May (Note: you need to sign up for Medicare 3 months before to 3 months after your 65th birthday) and told me I'd be getting Medicare w/o any penalties. Up until that moment I had been shaking a bit, and out of breath, and suddenly it stopped. He had me verbally answer some legal questions, typed some more, gave me a booklet and told me I'm signed up, I'd be receiving my Medicare card in a couple weeks. YES!!! I wanted to shake his hand so badly, but the bulletproof glass prevented that, so I told him to take the rest of the day off. He smiled and said Thank You.
I slowly walked out of that hallway and thru the SSA waiting room. Every chair was filled, and people standing against both the back wall and the side wall, two-deep (I hadn't seen it that crowded in my three previous visits, each was progressively worse). Got in the elevator. And you know that feeling when you finally achieve something, or beat a deadline, make an important flight, nail an interview, and you feel a weight off your shoulders? Yeah, I had that, times six or seven. I've never felt THAT much weight off my shoulders in my life, apparently this has really been bugging me. I went to a local mom-n-pop and got their Huevos Rancheros, enjoyed it, and when I got home at 10:30 am, I was so deadly tired I crawled into bed. Woke up about 1.5 hours ago, and am going to have a hard time getting to sleep tonight.
I'm posting this here not just to whine, but as a warning. This next part should be in the Off-Topic section; the change in my local SSA office environment, and the websites' usability, have changed noticeably since, well, a new administration came in. My advice to you all is, when you're 3 months prior to turning 65, Start working your application to Medicare immediately! If it got this bad in four months, no telling what it'll be like a couple years from now.

Yep Botch I just got on Medicare and SS at the first of this month. Now I have to carry three cards instead of 2 . The part D and my former employers as a wrap around are plastic but Medicare itself is cardboard. I need to find some laminating material somewhere. Of course it will be August 27 before they pay me.
-
A decade ago or so ago (old here) I was able to make all the above sign ups for Medicare on-line and SS later with no hassles. Never visited an office. I guess better to be lucky than good was in the cards.Louisville; Rolling smoke in the neighbourhood. Life is too short for light/lite beer! Seems I'm livin in a transitional period. My local "Offices-R-Us" stores offer laminations for less than you'd pay for a box of the film.Gulfcoastguy said:... but Medicare itself is cardboard. I need to find some laminating material somewhere. Of course it will be August 27 before they pay me."Hallelujah, Noel, be it Heaven or Hell,

Physics, bishes.
I actually made a load of pizza dough today. All the water/yeast/sugar, stirred together, allowed the poolish a few hours to ferment, then stirred in the rest of the flour (+salt and relaxer) into the poolish, and let my trusty KitchenAid form up a perfect dough after 13 minutes. My mixer is an Artisan, >30 years old, and has a steel mixing bowl which attaches to the mixer with a quick quarter-turn.
After 13 minutes the bowl was stuck tight, couldn't remove it. I'm a fairly big guy but kinda weak, and after struggling to unhook it, I just grabbed the doughball and divided it up into four, into separate bowls, and into the frig.
This was now an empty steel bowl, screwed into a steel collar, that I couldn't loosen. I got the idea to grab a 1/4-cup of water and an ice cube, swish it around, and dump it into the bottom of the bowl:

As I was returning the glass to the sink, I heard a couple of, what, "tinks"? I grabbed the bowl handle, and it came loose easily.
Physics, bishes!

Glad it worked right away, if not then I would also immerse the steel collar base in hot water partially (not touching the bottom of bowl)...contract the bowl bottom + expand the collar.canuckland

Sweet! The Red Clay Strays are coming to Indy in early August. I love how social media has helped artist get discovered. That’s how Teddy Swims got his start. He did YouTube covers. I think the RCS were a TikTok trend.GrateEggspectations said:Nice @hoosier_egger.

Apologies for giving that scoundrel Ozzie all of the credit. Thanks for flagging them when you did.Good to hear @shtgunal3. Looking forward to it.I’m lucky in that I’ve gotten to see a lot of cool shows over the years. Bought a lot of tickets but also worked at a venue while in University where I was sometimes seeing several big names every week. -

RCS was pretty clutch. Lainey also excellent. Great stage presence on both counts.Chose a spot where my wife wouldn’t get crushed by the crowd. Strategically positioned next to a hydration station.

Installed 2 Ring doorbells. Prime Day strikes again. We’ve got some porch pirates running rampant around our neighborhood. Hopefully they’re deterred by the new addition
