OT: fired up my wife's 30 year old Corvette: OT
RRP
Posts: 26,449
Today for the VERY first time in over 4 years I decided to uncover and fire up Pat’s ’95 Corvette.

Here is the honest mileage:

All these years I have had a CTEK brand Battery Charger & Maintainer playing nurse maid to the 8 year old battery.
I first checked the oil (Mobil 1) and it was fine and I inspected the engine compartment for any mice damage, found none nor any leaks on the floor. I had it sitting on 4 FlatStoppers which kept the tires off the cold concrete and round on the bottom. Then I removed the box of Bounce dryer sheets which mice hate which I had scattered thorough the interior, plus the engine compartment and even some stuffed up the dual tailpipes! Then with fingers crossed I fired it up! It didn’t even sputter nor hesitate after sitting for over 4 years!!! VAROOOOM!!! I let it idle for 10 minutes just to see what the various gauges were measuring and everything registered fine. Even the A/C begin dripping condensation due to today’s heat and humidity.
I had purchased a new premium car cover last fall to replace the soft heavy flannel cloth one I have used for storage in our garage for 30 years. But I never got around to even as much as to take it out of the box it arrived in! Now it will be put on.
I then took it out for a spin and “racked up” 18 more miles today! BTW - yes I am aware these 30 year old tires are beyond the manufacturer's recommended life, but I have no intention of taking the car out for any highway driving, so at least for the time being I won’t $pend the dollar$ to replace them.

Awesome! You should take it out once a month during the spring, summer, and fall if you can. I worry about some of your gaskets and fluids from sitting long periods of time. Slap some new rubber on those wheels and bury that needle. Enjoy!"The pig is an amazing animal. You feed a pig an apple and it makes bacon. Let's see Michael Phelps do that" - Jim Gaffigan

That a ZR1? My dad still has a '91 with the LT5 engine.....it's one screamin' machine. The only (non-electric) car I've driven lately that's that fast is a 668hp CTS-V Blackwing.
It's kind of wierd though, I feel like the AWD electrics have ruined my fun and interest in fast gas powered cars. The rear-wheel drive, torque steer, shift points, etc are now tasks you have to worry about, when in an electric you just press the pedal and accelerate perfectly straight & effortlessly at incredible rate. I miss the engine sound though, and I miss real manual transmissions (no paddle shifters!!) I still have a lot of fun in the Slingshot though since it's like a go cart with a 5-speed.

No ZR1...just a LT5 which still makes a nice throaty roar. And this sounds weird, but I just love the look of those steam roller tires!!!

We bought this new in '95 as my wife's daily driver when she was still teaching high school English. Her words and not mine - she wanted to show her kids she wasn't some old fuddy-duddy English teacher!

You've obviously taken great care of that car, Ron. But I was curious as to why this was your wife Pat's car and not yours? Is she the speedster in the family?"I've made a note never to piss you two off." - Stike

If my wife hadn't driven her sports car for 8 years I'd be tempted to declare it "mine".

Now that is proper care and feeding of an automobile. I'm with @WeberWho regarding rolling the tires when the seasons permit. The enjoyment of that 18 miles you just experienced can be replicated.
No reason to leave all your hard earned $$ to @SGH.

nah, I bet Ron has replaced every gasket in that car. It's what he does.WeberWho said:Awesome! You should take it out once a month during the spring, summer, and fall if you can.
