@DoubleEgger - yep that truly sucks.  At least your house dodged the bullet.
I'm not gonna wade into the climate change area but I will say that the frequency and severity of storms I've experienced for the past 4-5 years have increased.

The wife said pepperoni breadsticks sounded good. Ask and you shall receive. In about 10 hours. Forkish Saturday dough recipe for this one.

Bought a small generator (5k) to ensure that my freezer doesn’t go bad. The generator was $800 on sale but I’m sure the contents of the freezer would have been more expensive. I suspect it’ll be mid week before power is back on.

    Good times.

5KW will power your freezer (unless really manly), fridge, a few lights and your electronics with room to spare.
Longest I have have to feed the beast was 200+ hours when the back side of Hurricane Ike hit it in September 2008.  No mercy for those of us at the end of the grid.
Good luck as the feeding is a pain but worth the salvage of freezer and fridge contents alone.

I lost power for eight days each on two separate occasions when I lived in North Carolina so I have some experience with long term power outages. We’ll see how this one goes.

I suck. I failed to document the finish. I chopped up pepperoni slices and stuffed with cheese curds.

Had a big storm in 2022 that left us 10 days without power. Changed our panel this year and ensured to include a legal generator plug in. Also maintain 40 to 50L of fuel on hand at all times.

Residential solar is a hard no for me. I just need to get a 22-26kw whole home generator and connect it to my 500 gallon buried propane tank. I have one of my driveways that is between the tank and the generator location. I really don’t want to cut up the driveway so we’ll see.

That may be an option. Figuring out who to call is half of the battle.

I've had roughly 2000 feet done. Reputable electric contractor. Bore guys did conduit. Another crew ran wire thru conduit.  It DID put a slight hump in the asphalt that I can feel when I drive over it. Fwiw. If you have concrete it probably wouldn't flex like that.

Tie in farther down the line like closer to the house? I’ve mostly seen those generators beside the home.

We have a gas line running through the basement with a T that I could tie a generator into, it’s not far from the power meter either.

Whole home generator is on the list but as long as swmbo doesn’t have to drag the current setup outside and get it fired up and wired up it doesn’t seem to be a priority.

so much for the lawn....well there was a lawn =)

side note...the neighbor that was sneaking into the yard and planing pine trees all over the lawn a few years back, now wants me to take down more pine trees. she is building a new house and the one she wants down shields my deck from her bathroom window.  i said no while she texts a tree guy to take it down, tree guy was over a few minutes later showing me the pics of the tree to take down :o

I would like to propose that you strap a go pro on and just go about your normal life for a couple of months. That should be good for a pilot and a few episodes of the fishless reality show. We could start with TikTok, then YouTube and I'll bet a streaming company would pick it up pretty quickly.

Had an Uber driver from Nigeria and was chatting about foods he missed from back home.  He mentioned some of the harder things to get and after further discussion he told us about a store he goes to, it turned out to be next door to our destination. So we went to check it out - no signage or anything.  Completely wouldn’t find it if someone didn’t show you.  The store was amazing, jam packed floor to rafters with foods and spices and other daily items from the DR Congo - very specific ethic foods and teas I couldn’t even find on google.  The proprietor explained how to make the teas and I’m going back today to have her explain to me Fufu and pick up the special yams for it.

Did by some a box of smoked bony fish, plantain chips, and tea.

Thank a lineman. Those men and women don’t nearly get the credit they deserve and I know first hand what kind of impact a “thank you” has on those folks and their morale during storm work.

And yes, thank a lineman. I didn’t get a lot of sleep the last couple nights but I know I got much more than they did.
