Then I remembered I have horses, and nobody with horses is fiscally responsible, so I said screw it, let’s pull an @SGH and get a new truck!!
I think that also applies to people who have boats, small planes, and sometimes guns, too.

Man, I think it might apply to everyone who owns a Big Green Egg.  We are all economy stimulators around here.
Meh, Egging is a dirt cheap hobby comparatively speaking.
You know... you're right.  I need to up my game ;)

try high-end audio. where you spend 100s on cable lifters so that your 5 figure power cable doesn't touch the rug and pickup bad electrons that will pass into the power supply.

Unless of course you have converted all your equipment to battery supply DC power so that the grid does not effect your sound system adversely when a neighbour turns on a microwave.

He is honestly underselling here.  5 figure power cables for the 2ft run from your plug to your amplifier is not even a joke or exaggeration.  Don’t even ask them about the 150ft of romex and multiple junctions before it got to your outlet.

Nitrogen infused atom and electron oriented solid core cable with multi strand nano-particle ground sheathed and isolated speaker cables for $12k/ft is real too.

Audiophiles are the easiest mark for snake oil salesman that ever existed.

A friend invited me over to A/B test a few sets of speaker cables.  He had spent over $120k on a 2 channel setup and was A/B ing two sets of cables that were $15k each.  Supposedly that was discounted from their $25k msrp.

Fun fact, if two audio cables have the same R/L/C characteristics they will be indistinguishable in a A/B/X test.

You have never hung out with an audiophile.  I don’t fully understand it, but two of the smartest most logical people I have ever known threw all of that out the window when it came to their stereos.  Interestingly enough they were both experts in fatigue and vibration analysis.

I was hoping to allude to hearing loss, clearly missed the mark. I’ll try and do better, I did think about editing in a !!?, and that may have landed it. Lazy my fault.

That is truth about my never hanging out with audiophiles.  However, the science behind transmission lines (to include the audible spectrum) is fairly well settled.  I've hung out with that science, pretty sure you have to.  Did you ever present it to your audiophile friends?

  • if there is a version of kegel exercises for the auditory canal, those audiophiles might be all ears.

Reminds me of everyone pushing Monster cables when HDMI was first a thing.

Oh yeah, I didn’t present it directly, I asked them to explain how it worked.  Then I kept poking and would walk them through the physics equations and would ask what terms I was missing.  There general response is physics are a perfect world and their goal was to get the most perfect equipment because those micro imperfections caused stray edy currents which translate into the overall aural sense of musicality and timing.  It is like trying to explain to talk to a cult member and help them see they are in a cult.

Full disclosure, 30 years ago I wrote for an audiophile magazine/journal. The stuff back then wasn't quite as stupid as it is now, but still had its moments. The best one was the digital clock that when plugged into the wall made the audio sound better. Close second was the special piece of wood that you set on top of the speaker to soften the sound.  I kind of miss the crazy, but i'm happier with my egg :)
Really neat that you were/are so deep into it. Are you a musician?

amateur at best. brass stuff - trumpet, flugelhorn, trombone. I have a pretty good ear and that put me into audiophile world and then I started writing. Now it is listening mostly. ears are a lot older but still pretty good. What I really like doing is recording. All analogue set up with minimal miking. Hard to find time these days.

At least with egging as a hobby we get to eat our time spent.

If you lived near Ottawa, I’d totally want to connect, see your setup, hear you play, and try to convince you to let me lay down some tracks!

Growing up, a good friend’s father was a recording engineer and drummer. He had recorded some pretty big artists, but the only one I remember offhand is Céline Dion. When I was maybe 16, he let me jam with a group of professional musicians he played with casually. Sent me home that day with two amps that had been sitting in his basement - a ‘73 Marshall and a ‘71 Orange. Still have both.

In my early 20s, a band I was playing with did some recordings in a professional studio. Nothing I’m terribly proud of, but it was a really fun experience.
