    Article that may be of interest to techies on here, probably more so to older ones, focusing on the the slide rules place in history.
    Was of interest to me as familiarity with them was required for two year Electronic Eng. AAS program I matriculated from in 1985-86.
    Note that calculators were the norm, still have my HP-11c from that era, but we had to know slide rule usage.

    You know what’s interesting is that the price difference between reg unleaded and premium is 2% on this pic and now it’s easily 10% - not just today, but it’s been like that for years.

    Magnetic switches.  
     
    I bought a couple of these things to play with/build woodworking jigs with, and this afternoon I ordered a clever bandsaw fence with one on each end.  Basically they're 3/4" thick, with a knob on top.  Heavy.  Set them on a cast-iron tool table and they just sit there.  Twist the knob, and suddenly they magnetize, stick tight, and it takes most of my body weight to dislodge them.  Fantastic for fences/jigs, but I couldn't figure out how they worked.  I know if you have two equal magnets, set N to S poles together, they "combine" and double their magnetic field strength.  If you force them to contact, N to N or S to S poles, they cancel each other out.  But I also know, from playing with them since gradeschool, they "resist" being turned to a N to N, and force themselves back to a N to S formation.  
     
    The switches I got, don't exhibit that behavior; the knob is super-easy to twist.  I can't figure out how this works.  After buying the cool fence this afternoon, I started digging in via wiki, EweTube and googlez.  First stumbled onto "reed switches", they made perfect sense but are electrical switches, not a purely magnetic "switch" that I'm trying to figure out.  Then I stumbled onto this video:

    He does say that the switch has two magnets, and one is reversed to release the entire thing.  Sorta makes sense, but again, there's no resistance to changing the polarity, and I can't understand that.  
     
     
    Another question.  I seem to remember reading, way back in gradeschool, that if you store two magnets N to N, they fight each other and eventually weaken and die.  So, these magnetic switches I have, should I have them set to "On", and just keep them away from nails/screws, or is it okay to leave them in the "Off" setting?

    I often wondered about those, not how they worked so much as if the were worth it. I get so many woodworking catalogs and it seems like in the past maybe 10 (?) years or so, there has been an explosion of new gizmo's for people to spend money on. I'm skeptical of most of them. I have a full scale woodshop in the basement, but I taught myself woodworking long ago, and I feel like with the jigs I've made over time, and my hand tool work, I'm fine without all the latest nonsense. The marketing of it all is insane.

    I'm not saying it isn't useful, I'm saying I'd spend the money on some wood instead

    They are cool though. Sometimes I'll put a small magnet on the outside of my lips, and a small one on the inside..it makes my lips really, really thin in that one small area. If you practice with your magnet placement, you can make your lips look like you're pouting when you're not. If you do this in front of your better half, she might just immediately suck your face to get the pout out. THAT's the true power of magnets right there, because your wife's head is not made of metal, yet your magnetic lips attracted her head towards yours regardless.

    I miss woodworking, can't do it anymore.
