Beautiful. We left Miami yesterday, a bit chilly and windy. Hopefully is warming up for you. Lovely family... God Bless AmericaGrateEggspectations said:

Finished one of two corbels.My buddy couldn’t find anyone to weld some cast iron corbels to some hot rolled steel. So I said, sure, I can do it. After some research, I was like, f*ck if I’m going to break $550 of cast iron trying to weld it. So I drilled the cast iron for some bolt holes and welded some studs (SS) to the hot rolled with Nickel 59 from the back. Some a-hole broke a drill bit off in one of the holes, ruined 3 bits trying to get it out before just welding some slots - this pair of corbels will hold a small roof so there will be only compressive force on the cast iron. This mitigates internal stresses from welding the cast iron. I came prepared to weld with Nickel 59 electrodes, and some silicone bronze TIG filler.

Now I feel inferior. I was excited because I setup a dedicated wifi that covers the backyard for my pool automation.
You saved a(n) historical piece and helped keep a roof over someone's head.I would rather light a candle than curse your darkness.

I think it's an 1860s house.

...something I've never done before, maybe there will be a first, but it certainly wouldn't be something on @GrateEggspectations Florida vacation trip, plus he's a good friend.littlerascal56 said:

This is perhaps the most interesting part of this one side fight. Most of us have met Carey in person and consider him a good friend. Not sure why the hatred towards him. Sure he trolls at times, but rarely unprovoked, and most of the times funny as H E double hockey sticks.nolaegghead said:

BTW, I unscribed from @nolaegghead and @JohnInCarolina 's daily talking points email. My thoughts are my own.It's an interesting study in anthropology to watch it go on and on. Oz is a good friend, I'd say that even if he didn't drop by for dinner in person one time when he was tagging along with his wife on her family visit down here.This is a pretty good community. Even people with disparate backgrounds and politics can find something they mutually enjoy and can talk about it in civilized discourse. Sure, it gets a little heated, but people are worked up, mostly by people who are manufacturing discontent, not often from any direct impact from the usual implicated boogymen or actual actions of people to whom they direct their ire.Just like in real life, there's going to be someone who takes a "your momma" joke a little too personally and they feel like they need to cancel them. It happens and you either learn to live with those people or just be a miserable SOB. I choose living and life. it's too short to try getting around with a stick up yur bum.

There’s a long list of things that I admire about Carey, but near the top of that list is his generosity to others. From lending boats and cars to near strangers, to helping others with their projects, to offering solid advice, to hosting great parties, @nolaegghead is a pretty rad dude. Plus, I’m not sure I know of anyone else who can go from sharpening forklift forks, to welding, to baking sick-a$$ cheesecakes in a single day.littlerascal56 said:

Calendar alert: Beware The Ides of March!
Stay healthy and safe out there.Louisville; Rolling smoke in the neighbourhood. Life is too short for light/lite beer! Seems I'm livin in a transitional period. CHEETO (aka Agent Orange) makes Nixon look like a saint. -
I like the audible on the cast iron @nolaegghead I know people can weld cast iron but they heat it before welding and use weird rods, I dunno, I welded the base clamp for my wood lathe and that turned out OK but it was mine and I make another one if it melted away. The bolts take the guess work out of it, broken drill bits are a biotch.

i think you could have gotten away with brazing that, but it would have made me nervous. i dont trust the fancy stick welds or even tig on a piece like that. it was made to be bolted or lagged anyways

@MediumRarely
Thank you! Would love to have seen Miami but there just isn’t enough time. Hope you enjoyed your stay. You’re right that temps have been cool the last few days, but it hasn’t stopped us from enjoying the sun and water, and I hope it didn’t stop you either! -
Whoa. This is about as toxic as Canadians get.Canugghead said:

Didn't stop us at all. We have a small place in Coral Gables (Florida residents), and are blessed to have a vacation home in STX and travel a bit - especially before 2020. In the Gables about one week per month - used mostly for shopping/health care/launching foreign travel. Hope you are having a great visit...

The spousal unit has to do those every now and then, she has the same symptom of vertigo. They work most of the time, but not 100% because sometimes it's not her inner ear crystals or whatever.fishlessman said:woke up vertigo free finally this morning, guess the freaky epley maneuvers do work. that was messed up, hope it never comes back
