OT: Some Of Today’s Effort

After I sold Ol’ Mortimer awhile aback, I needed a new hobby to keep me out of trouble, so I got back in to woodworking. Today I finished a few end grain cutting boards. I have been talking with the owner of a local specialty kitchen store and he is interested in buying them from me wholesale. Seems like a no-brainer to start out and maybe eventually sell on Etsy and local farmers markets to cut out the middle man.

When did you find the time to perfect that skill-set? Not in the USN for sure. Great boards. Way to keep powering forward.Louisville; Rolling smoke in the neighbourhood. Nice! As a fellow wood butcher would you please tell me what glue you used? Those seem like a lot of pieces and parts to assemble considering the "open time" most glues on the market have. Or are those glued up components later assembled into larger pieces?Re-gasketing the USA one yard at a time

Ron, I used Titebond III as it has the best water resistance. Glue-up can be a challenge. Typically you glue up your strips to make a standard edge-grain board, then this is cross-cut, and glue up in to an end-grain board. The more complex the board, the harder it is to keep things perfectly aligned (as shown in the maple/cherry/walnut board above if you look closely).RRP said:Nice! Beautiful boards. I keep thinking I'd like to make some, but then throw the epicureans in the dishwasher. Maybe one big end grain for impressing at parties...

They do require some care and feeding. These are one-sided boards (rubber feet on the bottom to prevent someone leaving it sit in a puddle of water on the counter top and then blame me when it explodes. Also some of the pieces have minor voids so they are definitely on the bottom).Kayak said:Beautiful boards. I keep thinking I'd like to make some, but then throw the epicureans in the dishwasher. Maybe one big end grain for impressing at parties...I am also including 4 oz of board butter (4 parts food grade mineral oil and 1 part beeswax) with instructions to apply once every 2 - 3 months. No putting in a sink full of water or the dishwasher, just wipe down with water (and soap if necessary), rinse and dry.MMBGE / Large BGE / XL BGE (Craigslist Find) / SF30x80 cabinet trailer - "Ol' Mortimer" / Outdoor kitchen in progress.

Made up 24 - 4 oz jars of board butter, has a gorgeous deep golden color. Just waiting for them to cool a little before putting the lids on.

This one is a gift for my son’s in-laws (we will be spending Christmas in Canada with my DIL’s family):

14 by 21 by 2 1/4” thick. Walnut picture frame and maple/cherry checkerboard field. Not exactly happy with the slight misalignment towards the lower right where the cherry meets the walnut - need to come up with a better way.
It has been sucking up the good grade mineral oil like crazy.MMBGE / Large BGE / XL BGE (Craigslist Find) / SF30x80 cabinet trailer - "Ol' Mortimer" / Outdoor kitchen in progress.

Not yet. I haven't heard from the owner of the specialty kitchen store about any sales. If they haven't sold after the holidays I plan on picking them up and will look in to Etsy or selling them here via PM, whatever works.caliking said:
I did pick up a new toy today to help with flattening, juice grooves, etc. I just need to get up to speed on how to use it.

Can you make the outside blocks a bit taller and clean it up on the table saw? Looks incredible btw.CTMike said:This one is a gift for my son’s in-laws (we will be spending Christmas in Canada with my DIL’s family):

Wow!!!! Those are stunning! I suspect even working for $3/hr those look like $10,000 boards.
