    This quote has always bothered me.  A circle implies flat.  If it is not flat it is not a circle.

    It would make more sense if he said time is a flat sphere.  That would be a circle.

    Space-time issues get into general relativity theory, where the application of conventional Euclidean geometry starts to break down.

    Imagine being a little flexible with what you require a circle to be.  Namely, consider a circle as a continuous set of points that are all equidistant from a center.  Like when you attach a marker to the end of a piece of string that is attached to a fixed point, the center.  Traced on the surface of a sphere, you’d have what presents as a circle, except it’s not flat.
