If I could only own one grill, it would be an xl egg.  Thank goodness my wife understands my obsession with cooking toys and supports my habit.

I do hate when I have to explain to the dealer how the warranty process works.  Sometimes I throw Bruce's name around.  I think I found a new dealer.  Quite a nice array of BGE products.  I think I would still go green if I had to do it all over again.  I like the forum.  I was looking at a KJ Jr when I was looking at a Mini Max.  My wife thought I was being sacrilegious as I always talk BGE.  So an MM went into the arsenal.  Haven't cooked on the medium yet.  Someday.

  • Yes. I wouldn't think twice. If my egg implodes tomorrow, I'll have another on the way the next morning. Is it absolutely prefect? No. I cook butts, ribs, steaks, chops, burgers, roasts, stews, chilis, and I hot smoke bacons. I love my egg. I'm sure there are other devises that are THE BEST at each of these chores, but the egg does all of it for me. I love that damn thing.

I would have jumped straight to a Kamado Kamodo.

Honestly, yes I would have.  At the time there were no other legitimate options.  The Egg cooks amazing and I enjoy the community.  The only thing making me hesitate if I were to buy today would be dealer service.  I was spoiled in my old town with a phenomenal dealer.  He was close, stocked everything, and he handed you warranty parts from his stock.  In my new town half the dealers do not do "warranty" and most the sales people know nothing about the warranty.  KJ shipping direct to you is a huge plus.  The one dealer I found finally said they would do warranty, but I needed to pay shipping.

If I was 20 years younger I'd be buying a Komodo Kamado 32" Big Bad RIGHT NOW.

I would do it again for sure.

I would do it again. But I would start with a large instead of a medium and buy it 4 or 5 years earlier.

yes, I would do it again.  I have had a bubba keg, numerous kettles (still do), WSMs, Kamado Joes, and now I have a Weber Kamado as well.  I would still buy the BGEs.  The quality is fantastic, and the customer support is amazing.  Some that are butt hurt will tell you their horror story, but thats the same with any company.  I have an ooni and roccbox oven now, so pizza on the egg is not happening anymore, but thats ok, the egg is a mediocre pizza oven at best compared to the amazing offerings we have today.

I’d still get an egg. I’ve heard it called the Swiss Army knife of cookers. It does it all - maybe not perfectly - but good enough. My others cookers are specialized or require more time/energy to operate.
My BGE is always my default cooker for a quick weeknight meal or when I don’t want to babysit a cooker all day.

"Swiss Army Knife" is an apt analogy.  Who would pull out the little screwdriver blade if they have a full-sized screwdriver or, better yet, an electric impact driver within reach.  (the analogy falls apart when talking about portability, thoough).

The best part about owning a BGE is this forum. I have learned a ton about this type of cooking and feel like I could cook on any number of devices based on what I have learned here. But there are many folks here who take advantage of this support group while cooking on a KJ or other similar cooker. I would be one of them if I didn't own an egg.

That said, I would not be likely to purchase another ceramic cooker. I hate the fragility of these things, warranty or not. I bought an Akorn Jr a couple of years ago (14" grid) and it cooks just as well for a fraction of the price. Replacement parts (steel) are affordable and readily available (though I haven't had to replace any parts yet). And no warranty hassles or delays.

If I knew then what I know now, I would own an Akorn. Only.

I hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!

As stated above, Jack of all trades, master of none.  Cold smokes cheese and fish, hot enough for sear and pizzas.  Warranty can be frustrating but forum is a great reference.

Yes, when the temperature is -20C outside, propane has a hard time keeping up here.  The Egg just work great regardless of outdoor temperature.  I can get rock steady temps while cooking pork butts and beef ribs without needing any kind of temp controller (I do use a remote probe).

    Pizza... get a Roccbox!

When you purchase an egg, it is more than a mediocre yet versatile cooker, you have purchased a lifestyle. With that lifestyle, you meet people with a shared interest. Those people have become lifelong friends, for My Beautiful Wife and I.

Knowing what I know now, I would have bought the two I own, again, and add others if necessary. I have cooked on every surface you can imagine, and none have gifted me anything I enjoy more, than the friends and family, we have owning these eggs.

    So yeah, Absolutely.

Yes, and in the BBQ desert that is the UK, I would have bought one years ago if I'd known about them. I'd still buy the same to replace them now as well - for the forum and because I can run my XL and MMX without thinking about it now.
  • Yes....Got my large 2004 and they delivered my XL today. My wife said I was Crazy!

I built my XL and small into an outdoor kitchen that is now my rental property. I ended up buying the KJ3 for my new house. It's got some cool advantages and was a package deal with all accessories outside of a fan that I already have anyhow.

I did that because the KJ dealer is local, they deliver and they fix warranty problems out of their stock. The Green egg dealer pretends they don't offer a warranty and is a chain hardware store.  (My original dealer quit selling eggs and only offers KJ now)

I don't find the KJ to be better than my egg. But I do like the innovations, they are like getting the full sweet of goodies from CGS for free. But I'll always own a ceramic grill. Despite having all the other tools, I just enjoy the ceramic cooking process and LOVE the community.

I was given this knife when I was 7-8 years old. Not very portable for a kids pocket.  ;)

Maybe the leatherman of cookers versus Swiss Army knife.  The pliers at least get used all the time along with the knife, everything else when the proper tool is not available.

I would absolutely get it again, but I won't drop my gas grill or pizza oven. Each has it's purpose.
