Warranty Question - Pay for Shipping

Looking for input a warranty question.  I recently noticed that the fire ring and the fire box in my XL both had cracks.  Went to my dealer to report for a warranty claim.   Just heard back from them today with this:

The parts are covered under warranty however you would be responsible for the $150 charge for freight shipping.

Is this correct?  I was a bit surprised by this response.  Thought I would reach out to the forum for clarification.

Thanks in advance.

  • Have them get the warranty parts on their next order from their distributor. You’ll avoid these “freight” charges or find a new dealer

Agree.  If it is a special delivery, they will charge for the shipping.  Have them include it in their next order and they should not charge you for it.  It sounds like you have a crappy dealer.

$150 for freight?  BS!  That thing comes in a box and would be less than $30 on ground for a high volume shipper as the distributor is not more than a state or two away.

  • I hate dealers who do this. Totally shady.

  • Thank you all for the feedback.  I thought it did not sound right.  I am pushing back on them.

We are not far from each other.  Which dealer are you using?  I may have to switch.

I just picked up a new base for my large, a new ring, and a new firebox.  I didn't pay a dime.

I ended up buying a gasket and a set of bands from them.

I'd love to give your dealer the benefit of the doubt (perhaps you're dealing with a new employee).  But if it's a systemic problem, will BGE drop the hammer on them as a dealer?

I've been waiting for 2 months for a replacement base for my XL.  But it will be free when it gets to my dealer...

Foghorn's experience is similar to my own.  My dealer typically offers me two options. 1) No shipping charges, but I have to wait for them to receive a new order. This sometimes takes months.  or 2) Get the part much sooner and pay shipping.

I'd ask your dealer if the first scenario i mentioned is an option for you?  If not, time to find a new dealer.  (Make sure to buy something- anything- at the new place)

Yeah, good advice for the small dealers.  Even if you buy a bag of smoking wood.

Although I was curious about the Ace Hardware experience.  I've always appreciated the "Do it Best" Ace stores in the neighborhood.  If I had to pick a new dealer, they may be a logical choice.
