One of the coolest gifts we’ve received

Years ago, for Christmas, my mother in law gave a pretty neat gift to all of her children. It was a collection of over 200 pages of recipes that were staples of their upbringing. Painstakingly curated, typed, printed and bound, the recipes were categorized by appetizers, mains, desserts and baked goods. I can’t imagine the amount of time she must have spent putting all of it together.

Consequently, we can now recreate most dishes that formed my wife’s childhood, and that were also served when I first began enjoying meals in their family home. To me, these recipes are nostalgic and comforting.  Just this past weekend, my brother in law’s girlfriend baked and gave us a loaf of bread taken from this collection of recipes. Despite not being much of a cook or baker, the bread turned out beautifully - a testament to the recipe.

For anyone wondering how to fill their days during this pandemic, this could be a pretty cool undertaking. A great way to pass your lEGGacy on to loved ones.

For those wondering, the title page loosely translates from French to “Recipes from our home. To my children.”

That is amazing!  I grew up in a home that had probably a total of 5 recipes.  I cannot imagine having 200 pages of unique recipes to share.

I would rather light a candle than curse your darkness.

Funny you mention this back in Feb I ordered the Mastercook recipe software. Software is pretty easy to use, allows you to hang pictures in steps and/or finished product.
Intent was to give the cookbook to the kids. I started off like gang busters. However the wife is dragging her feet. We expect to have it done by Christmas if all goes well.

Our extended family had a family cookbook composed by my sister. We had about 400 copies printed and are now on the second edition.

Very cool. Before the pandemic I was going to my parents house on weekends and cooking for them using mom’s recipes. It was a win two fold, learning my moms cooks and spending time with them. We would put a recipe on a spread sheet tab and save it each time. Mom had the little cards and pieces of paper etc that are breaking down over time. Mom doesn’t  cook much now and this enabled me to do the work and them to have food we grew up with while documenting for the future. I hope to get back to that eventually.

That is a gift in so many ways, some of which are priceless I would think.  Thank you for sharing.

Guess you’re making up for that now.
  • This is awesome. Janell started this for the kids last year. They are all in various  stages of being gone to almost gone from home and she wanted them to have their favorite recipes for when they needed a little home cooking. Can’t wait to see how it all comes together.

And you are right- it is a painstaking labor
of love. It’s one thing to go in the kitchen and make it with “a pinch of this” and “a dab of that”. It’s a whole other thing to get it on the page so that it reproduces the exact recipe.

My mother put together a family recipe book from both mine and my wife's family as a gift for our wedding and we use it all the time. My favorite is the hand written jalapeno cornbread recipe from my grandmother that even recommends serving along side a cold Heineken.

I agree, these are the best gifts to receive for sure!

Just Vote- What if you could choose "none of the above" on an election ballot? Millions of Americans do just that, in effect, by not voting.  The result in 2016: "Nobody" won more counties, more states, and more electoral votes than either candidate for president.

    That's a priceless gift.

The summer after my freshman year in college, I would sit down with my mom in the afternoons,  and write her recipes down. Tried to quantify all the "pinch of this" and "smidge of that" kinda stuff. She'd tell me stories about our family as memories came up. I still have that notebook, but its not even close to 200 pages!

@6baluts My late Mother unknowingly did the same for me as the OP states. She left me with her recipes in Mastercook but in DOS. I contacted MC and they said that the cookbook she left behind would transfer right into the new version at the time. Ive been a fan of Mastercook ever since. I particularly like the "save to Mastercook" bookmark feature...

And now you've taken on the role of your mother and just let @20stone sort out the documentation details... with his laptop and Excel spreadsheet.

    Wow.  Awesome present @GrateEggspectations
