If your wife doesn’t like you golfing, you can suggest an alternative hobby: chasing a younger, prettier and more tolerant wife. 😊

Guns, Golf, Guitars and Green Egg... never enough time. Retired in 2014. If your young or if you're just about to retire, I highly recommend spending beaucoup time on the Early Retirement Forum. You will learn all you need to know about Life 2.0 Also check out the FireCalc retirement calculator. It's free and will help more than I can explain. Cheers!

You will learn all you need to know about Life 2.0There are some expenses that people don’t consider in retirement. Today I went and paid my house property tax. It included $650.00 in school tax though I have no kids ( that I know of though 23andme could always surprise me) Car insurance is in February. It has been creeping up every year since I turned 55 even though I haven’t had any accidents in 20 years. Health insurance went up $13 a month on the premiums but the real money grabber is increased copays . -
I baled out of the rat race at age 60. That was some 15 years ago. I hope everyone can do the same or even better!Re-gasketing the USA one yard at a time

Not sure why this thread got resurrected by Nola (check out the time stamps 2:30-3:00 am), but judging by his abusive posts, I am assuming alcohol was involved. I have been a member since 2015, with lots of cooks and pictures. Have even sold some of you guys my custom egg tables, cutting boards, etc.
Just not sure what all his hostility is about? I have discussed this with others via private messages, and several agree with me. Not a good thing for the forum for sure! -

I read this:
"What else is a old retired Utility Manager living in Kansas got to do with his time in the middle of winter? Watch FOX News, and “stir the pot” on the forum. By spring, I can get back in the “7 days a week on golf course” mode, and all us retired guys get to hash out the worlds problems at the 19th hole with adult beverages. Cheers!!!"
I figured, this guy is game. But NOOOOOO, I'VE INVADED HIS SAFE SPACE!
So very sorry. Really.
Proclimation to dish it out, then PM-ing others when realizing, can't take it. None of your charges at the Utility Manager office did this! Horrific! He is soooo mean.
If you know anything about me, you will...nevermind. That "whooshing" sound.
Carry on, and
Cheers!

Those guys that post between 2:30 and 3:00 A.M. are nothing but ässholes.
They have done nothing but incite alcohol soaked arguments based on left wing propaganda.
That is exactly what happens when you watch CNN and other socialist agenda television shows, 24/7, instead of getting out to get exercise and fresh air on the golf course.
They need to watch Fox News, quit thinking so much, and save their drinking to proper times, such as around the 19th hole with their buddies, before getting in their cars and driving home.

LOL I just checked this out and you're right. Member for 4+ years, and zero cook threads. A gigantic goose egg! Geez. I guess all of the golfing and Fox News watching and stirring of the pot gets in the way.nolaegghead said:And you have posted plenty of buffalo'd troll threads, and zero cook threads, btw, your thread history is under your home page.

Y'all can flame me all you want, but I don't understand the retirement fetishism. I've got probably 25ish years, until I'm 67, and I may go longer. I know I could cut 7 or so years off that if I jacked up my contributions and have much less disposable income now, but why? We're taking 3 trips this year, and if we waited until retirement 1 wouldn't be possible at all and another may not be possible and/or we may not be physically able to do what we want to do.

You're right about the balance. Pensions and savings are an 'outgoing' or expenditure and should be scrutinised as such. The only difference is that you can recall savings.Acn said:Y'all can flame me all you want, but I don't understand the retirement fetishism. In your position there's way too many variables to start making solid plans for retirement - other than having some sort of pension. Everyones circumstances are different, ie. kids, divorces, habits & hobbies, other investments or debts - known and unknown.
Best advice I ever got was; don't make long term plans, but be organised instead. So I aim to keep on top of personal admin and keep an eye on what's looming.Other girls may try to take me away
But you know, it's by your side I will stay -
It’s easy to say that now but I used to have salesmen who were retirement age (one was 70) who wished they could retire and loathed their decisions of their younger years. I couldn’t imagine being 70 and dragging my azz to work and put up with corporate BS. I guess it all depends on what you do.Acn said:Y'all can flame me all you want, but I don't understand the retirement fetishism. I've got probably 25ish years, until I'm 67, and I may go longer. I went to a retirement party for a coworker 18 yrs ago. The guy was always tight with his money. He retired at 57. All of his fellow managers that he “grew up” with in the elevator business were there. A lot of them
were big spenders, etc. I will never ever forget the look on their faces at that retirement party. It was a consistent look of personal disgust and jealousy. Frank informed them that he has bought a Nordhavn yacht and wanted to fulfill his dream of crossing the Atlantic. It was an early life lesson that has stayed with me.
Personally, I’ve been looking to retire since Day 1. I can always find something better to do than go to work.
I also read an article a while back where tens of thousands of terminally ill patients had been interviewed over a long period of time (decades I believe). Every male that was interviewed (every single one of them) said that they wished they had not devoted so much of their life to work and had devoted more time to family and fulfilling their dreams.
With all of that being said, my Mom summed it up best “There’s a big difference between having to go to work and wanting to go to work.”

There's definitely a balance to it. You still have to live while saving for retirement. I'm like @DoubleEgger, ready to control my life right now.Steve

I think a lot of it for folks is how much they hate their current job, or how stressful it is. For some jobs I can totally understand how people can't wait to be done. I travel plenty but there are people that are in planes twice a week or more. I would hate my job if I had to travel that often, and be eager to get to retirement.Acn said:Y'all can flame me all you want, but I don't understand the retirement fetishism. But one point your post reminded me of is that if people can manage it, they definitely shouldn't put off doing lots of fun things until retirement. Take the time to do some cool stuff now when you're relatively young and healthy, and it's not painful to say walk around several miles in a cool city on a nice day."I've made a note never to piss you two off." - Stike

I've got three more Working Mondays to go, and turn 60 in mid-February, so I did better!RRP said:I baled out of the rat race at age 60. That was some 15 years ago. I hope everyone can do the same or even better!
By two weeks.
Lots of good points about "wanting" vs "having" to work, that makes a big difference. I've been the Military Construction POC for Hill AFB for four years now; we have about a dozen projects that really need to get funded, but in that time Congress only funded one, last year, and those funds were usurped for somebody's wall at the southern border.
So, no, I have no fulfillment and its not worth going to work anymore. If I do get bored (and this is a strong possibility) the on-base contractors for the "Ground-Based Strategic Deterrent" (replacement for the Minuteman III ICBM) are hurting for engineers, and that's the field I'd spent most of my career in (I've had a couple nibbles already, even though I haven't advertised yet). We'll see.
What's been said about health, and being able to do the things you want, is also high in my consideration. I've had two DVTs and two PEs (blood clots to the legs and lungs) and if the next one hits the ticker or my thick skull, that's "lights-out". I don't want to die a year before my retirement, like my Dad did...

I retired at 56. I was tired of making bricks without straw and without cost of living raises. I worked building roads , bridges, truck weigh stations, public rest areas etc. We were funded by fuel taxes which were last raised in 1987. The Lieutenant Governor Tate Reeves controlled all legislation and adamantly refused to raise any taxes. He is now the governor and could veto any tax increase. I had 31 years one month and 1 day official time of service. Though they didn’t count 5 semesters of continuing education (think interning) while in college. Unused leave time brought that up to 34 years(I worked that much over time). I had originally planned to work to 35 years not counting leave time but our retirement was based on both time served and the average of our 4 highest paid years. Plus the pension, unlike regular service, had a built in cost of living raise. Thus I retired exactly 4 years since my last raise.
I retired young but I had been working for pay since I was 14. Better to leave on my own terms. -
@DoubleEgger You nailed it.

@botch the GBSD should be awarded around Aug/Sept depending on the protest. That one should last decades- although not as long as the D5 program. Ready for that one to award- should be a good annuity for me.
