Duke’s PSA re: Mayonnaise......can now be enjoyed on the go....

I have lived in SC all my life, and have not seen this in any of our fine restaurants in the area. You know they produce / manufacture this stuff here in my home state......and the standard amongst the national brands is to use the cheapest thing they can (for to-go) condiments. So if you are traveling down south (maybe to our beaches or other tourism locations, you know you are in one of our finest restaurants when they offer this to their valued customers.

The ownership changed hands this year, C.F. Sauer descendants sold the company. I hope the quality stays the same.1 LBGE, 1 SBGE, 1 KBQ and a 26" Blackstone near Blackstone, Virginia

hard to believe, but in this 1 horse town in NE Kansas with a Walmart, this is available. I've been buying ever since I first saw it on the shelves.Lrg 2008

They don't sell Duke's here. That's okay, they're all pretty much the same. I do notice a slight taste difference when comparing, but one is not better than the other, just a little different. I used to pick up a jar or two of Dukes when I went to visit Mom, but I'm just as happy with Hellman's or Burman's (ALDI) which I have heard is re-labeled Hellman's. Whatever...
I hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!

Sold to some NC folks. Hopefully they will be ok!rifrench said:The ownership changed hands this year, C.F. Sauer descendants sold the company. I hope the quality stays the same.Canton, GA

It would be interesting, maybe at the next Butt Blast, to do a blind tasting between Hellman's, Duke's, Kraft, Best Foods (my local favorite), and of course home-made, maybe using the latest Cooks Illustrated recipe."Hallelujah, Noel, be it Heaven or Hell,

...and thinking about it, looking at what mayonnaise is actually made from, how about comparisons with different eggs, free-range vs. industrial chickens, olive oil vs. canola oil, Spanish olive oil vs. Italian, vs. Californicate, Morton vs. Iberian sea salt, whisked by machine or by hand, circular vs. back-n-forth (CI just did that, with surprisingly different results), copper vs. SS vs. plastic vs. glass bowls, high vs midwest vs low humidity, okay, I'll stop now.

I am thinking you need to host, organize and orchestrate this on behalf of all interested. So happy to learn you will be attending this year.Botch said:It would be interesting, maybe at the next Butt Blast, to do a blind tasting between Hellman's, Duke's, Kraft, Best Foods (my local favorite), and of course home-made, maybe using the latest Cooks Illustrated recipe.
Note......you might want to plan it pre-event on Saturday, before the marinading starts.....or not.Ellijay GA with a Medium & MiniMax

I was born and raised in Va. and Dukes was/is the go too in my family. After moving to Florida many years ago (and hurricanes) its no different. If it is different, its Blue Plate.

Since I will then be retired, I may have to do this! (wait, "this year"... when in the CY is Butt Blast?) I retire next Feb.northGAcock said:

I don't buy Duke's for the flavor as such, but more for it's flow properties - there is less residual mayo stuck to the sides of the bottle vs. other brands when the bottle is empty.Botch said:It would be interesting, maybe at the next Butt Blast, to do a blind tasting between Hellman's, Duke's, Kraft, Best Foods (my local favorite), and of course home-made, maybe using the latest Cooks Illustrated recipe.
I pay attention to such things ever since caliqueen told me about her friend who wrote her Food Science PhD thesis on the rheology of mayonnaise.
And homemade mayo is my absolute favorite.#1 LBGE December 2012 • #2 SBGE February 2013 • #3 Mini May 2013A happy BGE family in Houston, TX. -

Please ask Caliqueen if her friend now works for Heinz. It HAS to be a match!caliking said:

Once you try these, you will never use Dukes again.

I would rather light a candle than curse your darkness.

OMFG.

edit: the above was aimed at 8 jars of mayo, not MW.

As we were traveling the country for 10 years we always wondered about Hellmann’s and Best Foods because they’re made by the same company. A while back we got our answer.
East of the Rockies it is Hellmann’s and west of the Rockies it is Best Foods.

This is the reason I will die due to clogged arteries.
Now Duke's can travel.
That is just great.

That happens a lot; quite often Cook's Illustrated often publishes taste tests, and mention that a particular brand is called something else, depending on which side of the Mississippi it's on.JNDATHP said:As we were traveling the country for 10 years we always wondered about Hellmann’s and Best Foods because they’re made by the same company. Doesn't that response confuse the issue of those mayos being the same thing and just relabeled by location with "...the company decided that both brands and recipes be preserved."If Hellman's and Best Food are still using their original recipes isn't there likely some difference in taste?“Reality is that which, when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away.” ― Philip K.
