As we were traveling the country for 10 years we always wondered about Hellmann’s and Best Foods because they’re made by the same company. A while back we got our answer.

East of the Rockies it is Hellmann’s and west of the Rockies it is Best Foods.

And in some locations they offer both brands. For example, we live on the Front Range of the Rockies. King Soopers, which is a Kroger chain, sells both.

All this talk about Duke’s got me wanting to try it.  So I ordered some from Amazon and it’s in the fridge.  I grew up on Hellman’s.  Wilma insists Kraft is better.  She does the shopping so that’s what we get.

We agreed on taking the “Pepsi Challenge”.  Those unacquainted with that, it means a blind taste test.  Wilma balked at putting a dab of mayo on a spoon as a tasting method.  I guess she wants to taste it in context.  We chose a familiar food for supper tonight that requires mayo: BLT sandwiches.

Will the winner be the forum favorite and heavily touted Duke’s?  Or will Kraft win the day?  Stay tuned.

Duke's is "heavily touted" on here because it is a popular southern brand and I would venture to say that there are far more southerners on here than there are from any other part of the country. Besides, Kraft is so "conglomerate-ish". =)

Outside of the Southeast, I'm not sure what regions carry Duke's, but I've never been able to find it here. When I visited Mom in VA, I would sometimes pick up a jar or two. Then, I bought a jar of Hellman's when I was almost out of Duke's and did the taste test. Is there a difference? Yep. Is one better? Not to me.

BTW, I just looked at Walmart and Amazon. 2x32 oz jars cost $7.98 at WM (free 2-day ship to store) and $14.65 at Amazon (free shipping, but not Prime). I've been quite happy lately with Berman's from ALDI (about $2 per jar as I recall) and always available.

But, why not? I just went to Duke's website to see if things had changed. It says Walmart sells it here, but they don't. I was just there and not a Duke in sight, as it always has been. However, turns out they supposedly have it at Family Dollar or some such (which I didn't even know we had). So I drove the two miles to the store I didn't know about and lo and behold, 32 oz for $3.50. Don't know if they will have it when I run out, but it's the only Duke's I've seen north of VA. Not that I've done any grocery shopping in NJ or Delaware, etc. Anyway, if you think you can't get it, check here...

The results are in!  Daughter #1 could not tell the difference.  Daughter #2, Wilma and myself preferred Duke’s.  It has a richer more “mayonnaisey” taste.  I’ve always wondered about Duke’s and now I know.  Thanks fellas!

Welcome to the Dark Side. I noticed it right away.

There are cooking forums that pit Blue Plate against Dukes, and they get down right nasty with their allegiances...worse than here when we do a Friday night lump throwdown.

In all seriousness, the best Mayo I have had is made by my wife's grandmother.  We usually have a jar in our fridge at all times.

In a pinch I use Best Foods/Hellmans.  No Dukes around here.

I'm a long-time Hellman's fan but had to find out why there is such enthusiasm for Duke's. To my surprise, Family Dollar carries Duke's here in Colorado Springs.

Wow. Just wow. Duke's is fabulous! We'll still finish the two containers of Hellman's that we have, however, going forward it's Duke's all the way.

I have not seen on the shelves anywhere, but just guessing, for a lighter version of Dukes, when compared to others, it will be best in class.

If you strike out at Family Dollar or walmart local, online order from walmart. $7.98 for two 32oz jars, free ship to store.

You just had to, didn't you...
    https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mayonnaise

When my folks moved back to India, about 30 yrs ago, mayo was not readily available. So my mom figured out how to make a bunch of things that we missed,  from  scratch. Fried chicken, hamburgers, brownies, etc... and mayonnaise. I didn't get back to eating store bought mayo until I returned to the States for college.
