When you post or otherwise share User Content on or through our Services, you understand that your User Content and any associated information (such as your [username], location or profile photo) will be visible to the public.

    To make FaceApp actually work, you have to give it permissions to access your photos – ALL of them. But it also gains access to Siri and Search …. Oh, and it has access to refreshing in the background – so even when you are not using it, it is using you.

    Just got this in an email from our OPSEC office; it's not FOUO so I can post this "Word to the Wise" here:
     

    Every once in a while, a “fun” website or app that requires us to upload a photo of ourselves goes viral. Needless to say this opens up the user to a host of OPSEC vulnerabilities.  Let’s take a brief walk down memory lane, shall we……..

    1)      In 2015, it was Microsoft’s How-Old.net, which would guess your age based on a selfie.  It turned out to be a showcase for Microsoft’s facial recognition technology.

    2)      Amazon followed in 2017 with its version that showcased its Rekognition API – the same technology used by law enforcement.  

    3)      In 2019, we are again walking down the path thanks to the FaceApp Old filter.   Sounds fun, right?  I mean everyone just can’t wait till they turn older (joke implied).

    However, what do we know about FaceApp?

    1) It requires your Facebook login

    2) After login, FaceApp receives your name, profile picture, photos and email address.

    3) The company’s privacy policy ambiguously states how it can share data with its “Affiliates”…. Here is a big OPSEC Red Flag…..The Company is based in St. Petersburg, Russia!          

                Like many apps and websites, the Facebook federated login grants FaceApp an enormous amount of data. Your email can be used in combination with other data brokers to find out who you are, where you live, and other demographic information. Granting access to all your photos allows this personal information to be combined with highly accurate facial recognition.  Now I am not implying that FaceApp is doing this, however, there are several who are using facial recognition programs.

                Even if the intent is less nefarious (e.g. they’re selling data to a marketing aggregation data broker), the trade-off of your privacy for a simulation of your older self is not a good deal. 


    Counting to ten only makes it Premeditated.

    I’m not too concerned, seeing as they already have me. But - when I was asked, I turned permissions off on my iPhone for everything except the pics. 

    I’m convinced that, even though I don’t use my really name on the internet, typically, the Russians and the 1337 h4x0r5 are already in my phone. I just wish they’d make a cool untraceable ten million dollars magically show up on my doorstep. That’d be really helpful..

    i apologize if I led  anyone to believe I was trying to sell you out. I would be horrified if that’s what you all thought.
