OT - Do You Still Have a Drive-In Theater Near You?

The Meth Gator thread (OT: And if you thought a sharknado was bad) almost got me to comment "Coming to a drive-in theater near you."  But I thought a drive-in theater thread might be entertaining to some.  They had all the great & cheesy monster movies there.  When I was a boy, my folks would put blankets on the roof of the station wagon and us kids would watch the show.  We didn't weigh much and cars used to be tough being made of steel and not tin foil.  Here in Flint, we still have a local drive-in theater and we enjoy it a couple of times a season.  We saw Toy Story 4 & Aladdin a week or so ago.  I gotta admit I slept through most of Aladdin.  Do you have a drive-in and do you go from time to time?

  • We have a pretty big one out here in west Texas.  It has 3 or 4 screens if I am not mistaken.  The wife and I used to go, but haven't been in a while.  The second movie starts so late.  (I must be getting old)

We still have one in my home town of Henderson N.C. I remember back in the late 70's my grandmother and her entire DAR group badgered them until they quit showing late night porno's. It was hilarious. They do a pretty good weekend business now.

We have one left in operation. About 40 minutes from me. It's been a few years since we've last visited.

No idea. Haven't been to one since the 60's.

I hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!

There’s one the next town over from our beach house that’s apparently been there since the 50’s, but the movies aren’t great. Usually a kids movie and whatever crap movie is currently in theaters. A lot of people want to see some throwback flicks like Jaws or Caddyshack but hasn’t happened yet.

Being old there were three within 20 miles in my youth that were definitely appreciated.  Now there is one about 16 miles away that opened within the last year although I have not been.

We have one about 30 minutes away. A few years ago there was a huge drive for them to get the digital projectors. Pretty cool place, except for the South Carolina mosquitoes and humidity....

It's on the other side of town, but yes.  $9 ticket for adults and that gets you two movies.  I should go check that out.

I haven’t been to one in 30+ years.  In my misspent youth, we used to put a keg and a few pledges in the trunk and caravan into one in Atlanta- I think it was off I85 somewhere inside the perimeter.

We do still have one in Memphis.  I haven’t been there, but was tempted a while back when they had a 80’s movie marathon- Ferris Beuller, Risky Business and the like.

Sadly, we still have a Coyote drive-in in our area. They have been here for a few years. They closed down for the winter, and I presumed they would never re-open.
Much to my dismay, they re-opened when summer arrived.

I have never been. Not because I have not wanted to. I might try it sometime, when I can find a movie I like.

  • We have one in Goochland County Virginia established around 2009 or 2010. Sells out. Cars backed up to get in.
The owner lives in my subdivision. I thought he was crazy when he came up with that idea. Now he is going to add a 2nd screen.
He does it right. Family friendly, but not Butt Blast family friendly.

The drive-in was a regular Saturday night out when I was growing up in high school.  We even went as far as bringing in extras in the trunk.  The drive-in we most frequented was in Winter Park, FL.  When it was built they put in speakers in the yards of the homes across the street.  Those folks could sit out in their lawn chairs and take in free movies.  I lived in Miami for a while and several of the drive-ins there had air conditioning hoses on the speakers that would fit and you could roll your windows up and stay cool.

Since the subject of in car activities was broached, I have a question. For the younger crowd, how many were conceived in a drive in theater?   :o

Had one in college, used to put an old mattress in the bed of the pickup. Woke up after the second show one time and was the only vehicle left in the lot. Take the grill and tailgate before sundown, good times!

Surely I'm not the only dude in his teenage years who snuck into the drive in driving in the OUT lane with my lights turned off! We would then quickly find a spot near the back. Then when we saw we had not been caught to find a nice spot nearer the screen!
