OT - Identify THIS SHIP! - OT

Greetings friends,
We have been lucky to enjoy our freedom as a week family vacation on the southern outer banks (Emerald Isle). Always thankful for those whose service and sacrifice keeps us peacefully in the cigars, drinks, and grill.
This ship has been running back and forth a few miles out, heading north, then turning back south a few times. Today, there was a smaller fast boat running up to it and away again. Amazing to imagine what’s going on. You can see it in this pic pretty decently.
Can anybody tell tell us what kind of ship that is?
and — again — our deepest respect and thanks to all who are the family of service men and women protecting us and defending our freedom.
Thanks!
8-D

LHD. It's an amphibious assault ship. Hauls marines around.Las Vegas, NV

It also has LCAC's (hover craft for a better term. They sink the back end of the ship down and load and unload them that way. I was stationed on one for 5 years. Fun ship. They also carry a compliment of marine helicopters and harriers.Las Vegas, NV

That is not a fun place to be. The heat I can handle, but add the humidity of being on the water is nearly unbearable. The Suez Canal is worse, did that transet 7 times.Las Vegas, NV -
My son just spent some time on the USS Makin Island which is a LHD. They were in some bad areas too. They typically launch helos, vertical aircraft (stovl), and amphibious craft. Spec ops usually carry on these ships.

this website can help figure out the name of the vessel if you are trying to do that. Lots of cool info on the ships at sea.

Please do video any repercussions of approaching that vessel. Tasing, machine guns, surface to surface missiles, poo flinging.
