OT - Identify THIS SHIP! - OT

Greetings friends,

We have been lucky to enjoy our freedom as a week family vacation on the southern outer banks (Emerald Isle). Always thankful for those whose service and sacrifice keeps us peacefully in the cigars, drinks, and grill.

This ship has been running back and forth a few miles out, heading north, then turning back south a few times. Today, there was a smaller fast boat running up to it and away again. Amazing to imagine what’s going on. You can see it in this pic pretty decently.

Can anybody tell tell us what kind of ship that is?

and — again — our deepest respect and thanks to all who are the family of service men and women protecting us and defending our freedom.

Thanks!
8-D

It also has LCAC's (hover craft for a better term.  They sink the back end of the ship down and load and unload them that way. I was stationed on one for 5 years.  Fun ship. They also carry a compliment of marine helicopters and harriers.

That is not a fun place to be. The heat I can handle, but add the humidity of being on the water is nearly unbearable. The Suez Canal is worse, did that transet 7 times.

My son just spent some time on the USS Makin Island which is a LHD. They were in some bad areas too. They typically launch helos,  vertical aircraft (stovl), and amphibious craft. Spec ops usually carry on these ships.

Those ships have some awesome capabilities. Read up on them, if you are into that sort of thing.

Oh man- I wasn't even thinking about the literal heat. Was more talking about the tension over there right now. Add the literal heat in and I can’t imagine what a great time they must be having.

I was there in 06 and 09. At the end of my 06 deployment, as we were leave the straights and couple of Iranian Fast Boats came within 150-200 yards of the ship. I was on a gun mount at the time. Fun times!

What’s the regulation if I drive the motor boat up to look at one?

    @MaskedMarvel I found this...

    https://www.boatus.org/study-guide/navigation/security/

Potential for Big Fines and/or Imprisonment (or worse):

    Some of the highlights:

    Naval Vessel Protection Zones:

Must use minimum speed if within 500 yards of any U.S. naval vessel

Do not approach within 100 yards of any U.S. naval vessel

Communicate with ship on channel 16 if conditions are such that you must approach inside 100 yards.

this website can help figure out the name of the vessel if you are trying to do that.  Lots of cool info on the ships at sea.

Please do video any repercussions of approaching that vessel.  Tasing, machine guns, surface to surface missiles, poo flinging.
