Major malfunction during high heat pizza cook

So I was on second pizza of 3 cooking around 700 when this happens. To save the cook and manually placed dome on and off with my high temp gloves to save the pizza. Dome fell off back of patio onto grass and didn’t break. My springs and bands have been rusting and screws have been breaking before tonight. I guess I need a whole new assembly. Any tips on getting this back in order ?

No tips, just OH WOW! I'm glad nothing is broken.

There are a few threads here about mounting new bands, correcting overbite, etc; good luck!"Dumplings are just noodles that have already eaten" - Jon Kung

BGE now has a better upgraded hinge assembly for the large egg. I would suggest purchasing it. And boy are you lucky the dome didn’t break!
How long have you had your egg? If the hinge is still in the warranty period, I would suggest contacted BGE and tell them what happened. Tell them about your issues with the breaking bolts and you may get a new hinge for free.NW IOWA -
Which bolts are breaking? All the bolts and the bands rust eventually but the top shouldn't fall off. IMHO when you cook at hi temp it causes the bands to expand and if the band bolts are not tightened the bands become loose and that's what caused your lid to fall out. The two bolts that I believe are 5/16th in the instructions say those bolts will break before you can break the top. The bolts actually should bend when they're tight.XLBGE, LBGE, MBGE, SMALL, MINI, 2 Kubs, Fire Magic Gasser

Been there, wasn’t as lucky though.

If your hinge is fine, you can purchase just a new handle that has the tabs that grab the ceramic haunch. If you need new hinges or just want them for easier adjustability, you can get the whole new assembly which includes the afore mentioned tabs along with a newly designed hinge which mimics the XL design.

Saw that happen in person where the egg was on a trailer! @JRWhitee

Luckily, that top did not break either.
Unlike Humpy Dumpy, that egg was put it back together again.

I had that fun last August. I lucked out with just a few abrasions. I went out and bought the new bands but haven't installed them yet. For the temporary fix, I just pulled the top band down, placed the lid back in and tightened everything. I'm planning on switching out the bands in the next few weeks, but things have been good since then.

Never had that happen, but I have replaced the hinges on both an old school circa '06 XL and not quite so old school, circa '12 L

I can’t believe this happens to others and you got pics! I saved the pizzas manually putting dome on with gloves. Burned the arm but worth it. Getting updated band assembly. Thanks to all

my dome used to do that until i lit the egg and got it to 350/400 degrees and let it sit there and then tighten the bands while hot. but i was doing pizzas over 900 dome temps, still needed to be careful upwards of 1200 dome temp. now bge did not recommend this at allEggAg99 said:I can’t believe this happens to others and you got pics! This happened to me during a pizza cook several years ago. Only difference is the bands pulled right over the dome and the dome stayed firmly in place. very disorienting feeling. Pizza was on. I think we just shut it down and cooked the others in the oven.

Tighten the nuts on the BGE every change of the season at minium. Glad to see your dome make it through the tumble. Your band should be good yet. Just make sure you get everything tightened back up.
