When someone invites you over for bbq...

living in the great bbq state of Ohio, I’ve learned that when someone invites you over for bbq, what they mean is burgers and hotdogs.  Do any of you find this to be the case where you live?

The neighbor is having a pool/bbq party tomorrow, which he’s invited us to, but prior to asking Norah to cook for it his  menu was grilled hotdogs and burgers.  Now he will have 25lbs of pulled pork smoked wings, and burgers and hotdogs.  Wonder what gets eaten first!!!

To many "bbq" means southern style smoked barbecued food - ribs, brisket, butts, etc.  It actually has a broader meaning. The social gathering meaning of a barbecue has been around ever since the founding of this country.

In cooking, often we implement steps for which we have no explanations other than ‘that’s what everybody else does’ or ‘that’s what I have been told.’  Dare to think for yourself.

Burgers, hotdogs, brats and steaks would be a "cookout", IMHO.

I identify with the Southern expectations also.

I don’t know what an invitation to a bbq is without an attached request for me to bring something like pulled pork.  It works.  They get a good menu item and I get free beer.

+1 for most people here in Minnesota. A grill is something that hibernates 9 months a year.

Here in Utah it means burgers and dogs. With the huge growth of traegers around here, it is changing to more bbq stuff, and I’m happy about that. I’m glad that the pellet cooker explosion is making bbq more common.

When I was a kid, 1950s, they called them cook-outs. Where I lived, hamburgers, dogs, sausage and fish. Slowly, anything cooked over briquets became BBQ. BBQ perch, anyone? Or if it had Hunt's sauce poured over it. Or A-1 and Liquid Smoke. Then, anything cooked outside over propane and lava rocks qualified.

My mom, an otherwise fine cook, considered spare ribs over propane, and drowned in Hunt's to be BBQ. You might not be able to imagine my surprise the 1st time I had tips from an aquarium smoker.

Sometimes it pays to hire a pro. I bet even her hamburgers are going to blow their socks off.

I’ve found that pretty much anywhere outside of the traditional BBQ states and groups like this, a bbq is a cookout.

When someone invites me over for bbq, I expect... Barbecue!

Brisket is brisket, ribs are ribs, sausages are sausages & burgers are burgers.
A social gathering in someones backyard is a cookout.
A grill is a grill and a smoker is a smoker.

    BARBECUE is shown above.

I'm sure, whatever anyone calls it, Norah Grace will do well. Enjoy the cookout. =)

I hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!

Whatever it’s called, I try to be a gracious guest. If the hosts are close friends, they know I’ll bring something good.

I’ll often volunteer to man the grill, because I enjoy it , and the host can mingle with company, but mostly so i can cook my own burger.
She was excited to get “hired” for the job.  She’s going to start the pork around 1:30am as they aren’t eating until 5p.  She also asked them to drag over her balckstone.  I believe it was initially a gift for me but I’ve lost the rights to it. Oh well she’s probably better at it than I am....just ask her

Everyone has a "cookout" around here with the typical burgers and dogs. BBQ means smoked meats.

@Legume she wants to try to teach a class this year for kids and adults.  We have a vocational school near us who we’ve been in contact with, to see if they can help.  Obviously the class is free and would just be a good time to share bbq with local people and hopefully inspire some families to start cooking together.
BBQ has given us something to bond around, my wife and daughter have been amazing supporters of the hobby and are enjoying all of the events.

The above really got me to thinking how times have really changed. I can remember in the early 70’s when “BBQ” in south Mississippi where I grew up meant one of two things. Either whole hog or a whole goat. Now 99% of time it’s burgers and dogs. Sometimes change is not good my friend👍

@Legume she’s got enough projects going.  She and I are working with a few companies now and the cooking class she wants to do has my plate full. She cooked at an egg fest last weekend, demoing pizza on the lg.  She’s also supposed to tag team a class with me this fall at one of the dealers in the area.

With my “final” surgery scheduled for Friday, I can’t take on much more.

Ok Eggers - I was raised in central MO and to me a BBQ only meant some meat or fish cooked in or on a thing called a patio or yard fireplace. The fire didn't come from processed charcoal, but from split woods of hickory, walnut (yes I said walnut) and cedar as I recall, let to burn down to hot coals. I recall being warned as a child to stay back as the oil splattered and "would cause me horrible pain".

@RRP real wood fire cooking is so much fun.  I remember being a kid and my grandfather and the guys all standing around cooking over live fires.  It was so much fun as a kid watching them work, and the food was amazing.
