How do yall keep your steel sharp? I have many ways and enjoy keeping my knives super sharp. This is a Benchmade North Fork pocket knife with a perfect mirror polished edge. Its crazy sharp.

Apex Edge Pro, sometimes going to the 3000 grit finishing tapes, and touches of 6 micron DMT diamond paste on a strop. But usually not mirror. No pics, don't have a camera that can take a shot of a mirror edge, just looks like a glint at best.Mis-placed my strop, grrr, so have been using the diamond paste on brown paper for daily touch ups.The paper by itself works pretty well, but it looses its tooth quickly, and I can run thru lots of bags just getting a petty sharp enough.

I used an edge pro apex for a while, it did a great job. But, I use my knives a lot, and the edge pro takes time. It now sits locked away, I may bring it back out one day when I have more free time. Instead I changed over to one of the work sharp (small motor powered belt) units, I keep it on my kitchen counter and run my kitchen knives through it maybe once a week, just a few passes is all it takes to keep the blades sharp. I also use it to sharpen my pocket knives. Some people are afraid of damaging your blade with the motor operated units and they are right, you have to be careful. I got the deluxe model which allows for variable speed, and I run it at maybe 50% max output. I can put an edge on about any knife that will clean the hair right off my arm in about five or ten minutes.

By the way, I had that same benchmade you referenced in your OP. Pretty sure they have a recurve blade which can be a PITA to sharpen. Another win for the belt style sharpeners is they are easier to maintain recurve blades.

I have a Shun honing steel that I rarely use unless it's on a neglected blade that needs brought back into shape. More often I use several Japanese whetstone's and a strop.

I have the wicked edge as well, I only have up to 1000 grit stones. I'm far from a pro and could use any advice as to how to sharpen better as well as if I need any higher grit stones or the diamond ones, thanks in advance.

there are some guards on the wicked edge home page, the problem with the gloves is you lose feel and having to take them on and off to do things. I was sitting on the couch in front of the tv trying to watch football and going too fast. Should have been in my normal spot with the sharpener at the right height and paying more attention. You should buy the 6 micron lapping film and the 1/.5 micron diamond paste and a leather strop. Also the 1500 grit diamond stone.

tz666 said:This is the end of my pinky finger, sliced it clean off. Safety FirstNo pic, but a few years ago I bought a Kikuichi gyuto that has a bevel somewhere between 8 & 10 degrees. About 3 minutes after taking it out of the box, I was distracted by something, and looked off to the side. Then went back to try my first slices, and was wondering "what the F is that?" on the blade when the first red drops from the postage stamp sized slice on my left forearm started oozing out. Never felt a thing except something like a breeze.Safety 1st indeed.

TZ, I looked at the guards you mentioned and it looks to me like they'd work OK. I may try them.Tampa Bay, Florida

Been using Shapton Glass splash and go stones ,500,2000 and 6000 grit. Also I use Worksharp with the Ken Onion Knife and Tool sharpener attachment .More of a freehand way to sharpen .Less chance of hurting knives with scuff marks. I do really like the results I get from my Wen wet / dry grinder with leather Wheel . Last couple years I am getting better results sharpening free hand .

Not sure if all that polishing is worth the effort to get a mirror finish? I have some 4000 blue belts that will leave a similar finish on my Benchmark knives, and are scalpel/surgical sharp. And only take 60 seconds to produce on my machine!
