Long time lurker but avid reader.  I arrive Monday around 2pm and have until Tuesday at 1pm to satisfy BBQ cravings.

Where to go and when?

To answer some of the age old questions:

Rutland is awesome
Flameboss 300 Rules
Even though I have a Smokeware Cap, I prefer the daisy wheel
ohh and, even though I am going to Texas, beans in Chili
Green or go home

With 1 day the only place to go is Franklins.

Call me a heretic, but I’ve never understood the appeal of the smokeware cap (minus maybe the rain water prevention).

If like most other landing strips, the preferred cut is the runway but given the patrons may have been surfing here they could be looking more adventurous with the Muhle razors and their exquisite attention to priming details.  Beauty is in the eye of the beholder...  =)
Louisville; Rolling smoke in the neighbourhood.  Life is too short for light/lite beer!  Seems I'm livin in a transitional period. CHEETO (aka Agent Orange) makes Nixon look like a saint.
  • i was hoping for a dinner and then a lunch.  I thought I've seen some other recommendations besides Franklin's but I couldn't remember what they were.

ohh and while not an awful suggestion, smoked beaver is not what I had in mind :)

@MNEggerandStuff a post late here but welcome aboard and enjoy the journey.  Above all, have fun.
Roger all, here's top-notch (at least around 20 months ago) place for lunch:
La Barbeque 2027 E Cesar Chavez St, Austin, TX 78702  Brisket is right up there and when I was there, no line to speak of.  Opened at 11 AM- I was there mid week at 10:45 and was second in the queue.
And here is the best for little to no wait (and perhaps better than Franklin's)  brisket source in the greater Austin area:
    Valentina's
11500 Manchaca Rd, Austin, TX 78745

I am sure the local Austinite's (or whatever the appropriate descriptor) will be along.  They are truly spoiled and can likely steer you to some great off the radar places.  Enjoy your brief visit.

  • I'm from Minneapolis and i hit up the in and out's when i'm in California, double double FTW!

I'm looking for BBQ spots in Austin as I never get there and don't want to waste the two meals while I'm there.

ohh and more answers to age old questions :

Rockwood and stlcharcoal over everything else
    lamb>beef>pork>duck
Sauce should add flavor, not make up for a lack of it
    Texas>Kansas>NC>SC in terms of BBQ

    :)

I always tell people to take the 20 minute drive to Lockhart, 3 famous BBQ spots within 1 mile, Smittys, Blacks, Krauze.  Not sure if you will have a car.

  • Come on down. Valentina’s or Stiles Switch for lunch and Loro for dinner. Im around Tuesday. Ill meet you for one or the other if you like.

Loro is an an unconventional choice but you can get franklin brisket with Tyson coles food. It’s an amazing place. Tyson is the owner of one of the best sushi places in America (Uchi) and Uchiko which is amazing as well. He and Aaron teamed up to open this place and it’s really cool.
