    I'm telling you it was.  I know this because we're 45 minutes from MS and I know people who didn't have the "optional" liability.  And it was legal.

    I'm about as libertarian as they come, but FFS. If you want to operate a motor vehicle on public roadways, you had better have insurance so that if you screw up my stuff you have insurance (or self-insured, unlikely) to replace my stuff.

    Practically all of them. I usually decide what I want before driving / riding. It usually works out. I bought my most recent bike sight unseen. Never owned or ridden the brand / make / type of bike. First ride was the ride home.

    Had it when I lived in Europe years ago. Never had a problem. Sold it the day some dude offered me almost half again, what I paid for it when I got it back to the States. 

    Should I ever buy another bike again, which I will not, it will be a MoGu. No doubt about it.

    It used to be legal in Alabama too. Not sure if they changed it.

    In Virginia you don't have to have auto insurance. However, If you don't have insurance  you're supposed to pay the uninsured motor vehicle fee which is a few hundred bucks per year. That fee does not provide any insurance for anyone tho.

    Even if one does get auto insurance in Virginia the liability minimums required are pretty laughably low ($20-25k?).

    Sold lots of cars/trucks on first test drive (46 years in car business). No, not my smooth selling.  Found if i would stay the hell out of the way the car would sell itself. 
    Salado TX & 30A  FL: Egg Family: 3 Large and a very well used Mini, added a Mini Max when they came out (I'm good for now). Just given a Mini to add to the herd.

    I’m the 80’s (ouch), I used to go to this great dive bar. At the urinal, there was a graffito that said, simply, “Look up” with an arrow pointing to the ceiling. On the ceiling, a bit behind you so you had to crane your neck back to read, 2 things were written:

     “you get more puzzi on a moto guzzi”

    and 

    “you’re pissing on your foot”

    Fixed opps. cary the store in leaner times but the big money is made on the sales side. Yes , finace is a big money maker as well as the insurance packages sold in the f and I depts.

    Nope. It’s mandatory. Has been for several years. At one time, liability and uninsured motorist was optional. But you always had to have insurance if you financed to be sure the poor banks were covered if something happened. I may be wrong on this, but I think that only uninsured motorist coverage is optional now. The more I ponder it, that is correct.

    I do remember that car insurance was much cheaper in Alabama as compared to neighboring states that required insurance. The state insurance commissioner sets a max amount someone can be charged. Excess costs to insure those high risk individuals were passed on to everyone else. Additionally, when something is mandatory, competition is decreased as prices tend to stay elevated. Everyone has uninsured motorist coverage anyway so the only downfall is a claim your insurance had to pay. I’d rather have the cheaper coverage and cross the bridge of an uninsured motorist claim in the very slight chance it happens.

    I believe the sarcasm was quite high in Nola's post.   ;)  My car insurance doubled when I moved to New Mexico, 60% of the population didn't carry any (which was illegal, but the fines were a lot cheaper than the insurance, especially if you had a DWI, or 28).  You were labelled a racist if you even suggested toughening up the laws, and I'd better stop writing about this now...
     
    Regarding the OP, I'm finally old enough to know not to test drive anything until I'm really ready to buy, and never never never test-drive anything you can't afford.  Oof-dah!  
     
    I did the right thing selling my '77 VW bus when I PCS'd from Albuquerque to Grand Forks, ND (a functional heater became more important); but damn I sure wish I still had her, I loved that bus!

    Wished I would have never sold my 77 Chevy K5 Blazer to buy my wife a wedding ring. Shoulda put that on a credit card and kept the truck.
