Recommendation for replacement dome thermometer?
Sea2Ski
Posts: 4,131
After 7 years, my current dome thermometer has become unreliable. Water worked its way in and rust inside it is making it "jumpy" and misread the actual temperature without tapping it, not to mention sometimes it is unreadable due to the moisture inside. So I need a new one.
Is there a current favorite accurate, reliable and even adjustable replacement for my OEM dome thermometer?
Thinking I might be able to score a deal on cyber Monday...

I agree with @fishlessman Ordered the Smokeware and it was 20 degrees off, they replaced them, but still off, and non adjustable...

Didn't know smokewares weren't adjustable. That would lead me Teltru. Was just passing along a cyber deal.Sandy Springs & Dawsonville Ga

@smbishop how long ago was that out of curiosity? According to the description on one, and the review on another, they state you can calibrate them. Maybe they modified them now?smbishop said:I agree with @fishlessman Ordered the Smokeware and it was 20 degrees off, they replaced them, but still off, and non adjustable...
I was going to get the multi-colored black faced one (that is the one that has the review stating that it can be calibrated.) But if that is not true - then I am going to go with the Tel-Tru

I have the BGE tel-tru (upgraded the original on the LBGE-although the orig is still quite accurate) on both and they are rock steady. I'm guessing your original is not a tel-tru thermo ( mine wasn't). I would go with the tel-tru unless you want the add-ons with the color scheme etc of the smokeware. I can't comment on the smokeware calibration deal as I have read "you can and you can't" although in fairness I think now you can. FWIW-Louisville; Rolling smoke in the neighbourhood. My thermometer on my large has been broken for the past 5 months. I don't really miss it.

Thanks @lousubcap
I went to amazon to read reviews on the one I wanted. The seller responded to the calibration question:
"This particular model cannot be adjusted. It comes pre-calibrated from the manufacturer. We do sell a new model that is adjustable."
So on their page, the one that can be calibrated has it in the description.

There was a time that Smokeware went from adjustable to fixed. Don’t know if they swapped back or offer both.
I’d just stick with Tel Tru. -
The new models do, now, but didn't at one time. I looked at them too and noticed it said they were adjustable.JRWhitee said:

I bought two, probably over a year ago. As you stated, it looks they now offer one that can be calibrated. I like the larger dial, which is why I bought them. Might have to check them out again. Thanks!Southlake, TX and Cowhouse Creek - King, TX. 2 Large, 1 Small and a lot of Eggcessories. -
Smokeware. Made in the US and adjustable.

I just ordered one, thank Brent.

Use the probe from your trusted digital thermometer.

i launched mine into the lake shoveling snow one year, was maybe a year later when i got around to replacing it. pretty easy to look at the vents, touch the dome and know youre searing/roasting/lowandslow by just touching it. for some reason theres an ocd problem that thrives with eggersnolaegghead said:My thermometer on my large has been broken for the past 5 months. Not to pile on, but I like the Tel-Tru. Seems to work all the time and each time I have tested it, it was bingo."Knowledge is Good" - Emil Faber

I had an uncalibrateable (new word) Smokeware that was out of calibration. They replaced it with a model that can be calibrated. Every time I check it (every 3-4 montsh) it needs adjustment. Before the turkey cook, it was reading 180 in boiling water.Large, Medium, MiniMax, 36" Blackstone

What's the preferred stem length on the TelTrus?
-
i prefer the 2.5 but in the egg it reads a little over 10 percent low. this doesnt bother me, easy math. the 3.5 stem is probably the best option both in length and being accurate enough, the 5 inch stem is too longSalmonegg said:What's the preferred stem length on the TelTrus?

While I agree with you @fishlessman about the 200º to 1,000º I disagree on the 5". That's what I use on 3 of mine and have yet to bend a probe in like 12 years! I do use a 1/2" toy wheel spacer outside so inside the egg is probably 3" or so which isn't a big deal.fishlessman said:

i used to put the clip on the outside and still bent them. the 2.5 is more booze friendly at late midnight cooks

This looks better then putting it on the grate which what I normally do for long slow cooks. I just use my normal gauge to get me in the ball park of where I want to cook when grilling, then it doesn't mater.jtcBoynton said:Use the probe from your trusted digital thermometer.

I don’t trust the smokeware...the one I have is calibrateable, but every time I check it needs adjusting so I lost confidence in it.kl8ton said:I had an uncalibrateable (new word) Smokeware that was out of calibration. Only issue is the diameter of the probe. Some brands will fit and some will not (fyi, that's an iGrill probe).Ladeback69 said:

Not wanting to sound like a smarty@ss but don't let the possible smaller diameter hold you back! The pre-drilled hole in a BGE can EASILY be enlarged!jtcBoynton said:
